Size of area rug

last year

Hello! This is a 9x12. I’m wondering if I should go up to 10x14, but I’m concerned about the walkway by the island and keeping everything as centered as possible. Thanks for your thoughts!

I think the rug size is right the much bigger will be an issue with the island. I find the rug a bit boring and not really connected to much at all. The sofa and chairs are quite modern but thta blue table and coffee table need to go. Then a rug with some color and BTW that blue color is awesome just not the table. I love the blue it adds some real life to the space so IMO Iwould do a rug like this then add the blue into the spaces next to this . I would to see a bit more oragnic shape for the coffee table maybe even some glass in an oval to make this space a bit less country or modern . I would have no idea why burgundy or green at all.

The blue table isn’t staying. And I’m planning on getting a burgundy/olive rug. What’s “wrong” with that coffee table? I appreciate your input.

I'd definitely get a larger rug. Right now it feels like your furniture is on tiptoes trying to squeeze on the rug. With a bigger one, can you not scooch it toward the sideboard behind your white chairs so that you keep the same distance from the counter stools? You have the space on three sides for a larger rug. It would just give your furniture more breathing room.

Tape out the next size larger and within a day or two will know if it works functionally. Could try moving the seating back a bit and I think it could make a big difference balance wise.

the rug size is good. center the rug on the fireplace... move the seating closer to the fireplace.

with the sofa centered on the fireplace.

I would place a swivel chair on each side of the fireplace.

if you need a runner behind the sofa, add one. even a long credenza/sofa table behind the sofa would add interest, you seem to have room for one.

Move the back of the white chairs 1/3 or 1/2 off the rug and then slide the sofa down a bit.

    Take another photo.

The sofa is centered on the fireplace and TV. If I center the rug, too, it would be up against the island.

I read chispa’s comment to mean sliding the couch away from the island. I like the idea in theory, but it may be too odd to have the TV not centered with the couch. You may want to see how that feels. I’d like to see a rug with a curvy organic shape to offset all the rectangular shapes and to complement the curvy chairs. I agree with Patricia that an exciting rug would add vitality to your space.

Looks like 9 x 12 is plenty big. Turn the rug and I would select a rug that has some of the green of the cabinets. The light rug doesn't work in the room.

Thanks, Beverly! What you showed is what I am looking for! Also, I had the rug turned previously but was recommended to turn to this way. :) Once I get the new one, I will turn it back again. Can I ask if you feel the coffee table is large enough?

Also, I’m considering purchasing two round ottomans/stools to place in front of the fireplace. Too much?

You have a lot of floor space in that room. If you're getting a new rug anyway, going up one size will not look too bag, while it's debatable that the current size is too small. So I think bigger is a win-win, while current size is a tossup. I really like the greens you're looking at.

I might prefer a square wood coffee table for this space

Use painter’s tape to see how a larger rug would look. It seems like it will work.

Have you considered and glass coffee table? Your furniture is “beefy”,and something lighter in the middle will also show of more of the new rug. (I love the second one from Beverly - and definitely include green.)

Some ideas for the table. Black and glass.

Those are Wayfair. Plenty more on other sites.

Thanks all! Not sure if anyone will see these, but I turned the rug 90 degrees. Thoughts?

I like that orientation better, but it still needs to be larger. :)

Much better with the rug this way. But I also think it needs to go up a size.
