ETA - One thing I remember him mentioning is having an ember bed beneath the gas logs helps the fire appear more realistic. Our fireplaces have that, and I’m not sure if it’s just part of the gas log purchase or something separate.

there is no such thing, they all look faux, choose something that looks nice and fits the budget... everyone know they are faux.

Shop at a local fireplace dealer. What looks natural in a glossy photo may look quite fake up close in person. The more expensive sets tend to look more realistic.

Yes…and I discovered they can be pricey. Stacking the logs unevenly can also help with “realistic.”

I agree the only way to choose is to see some in real life .

Did not want to start a new thread but wondering if its possible to have a traditional masonry fireplace with bottom flush to the floor but with lower cost zero clearance chimney thus avoiding a masonry chimney. I assume in this case no actual wood burning allowed, gas only but in any case mostly for appearance only. I am hopefully building a house and I like the traditional look.

Grand Canyon makes the most realistic gas log on the market in my opinion. Their new GlowFire Lava Series Gas Logs have burners inside the logs, so flames come right out of the logs themselves. They also have other logs that are cast from real pieces of wood and look great.
