UPDATE!! Did I make a mistake with the upper cabinets?

last modified: 7 months ago

Finally, I got it fixed!! 🎉 Thanks to all the amazing suggestions and feedback on here, I think it looks way more open and balanced now. I moved the original two 15" cabinets together to the left side and added a 6" open shelves to the right, which gave me 43" open space above the sink. I'm so happy with the outcome! Thank you! (New pictures attached). Next, is the backsplash!

We just renovated this kitchen. I wanted everything to look symmetrical on each wall and the solution above the sink wall was to have 2 cabinets on each side, and add open shelves to the left. However, now that its installed, part of me wishes i had kept that wall open and probably added just open shelving.

Did i make the right decision? I need some feedback before we add the backsplash so i could fix it. Also, if it stays as is, should the backsplash tile go all the way up where the shelves are, or stop under the bottom shelf? its going all the way up above the sink.

FYI, this is a summer house and i dont need a lot of storage space. I think i can get away with open shelving.

These are the best pictures i have at the moment.

Thank you!

Your wood in your shelves relates to the wood trim on your range hood which is nice. I wouldn't fill the shelves with small nicknacks but a few larger/colorful things would add visual interest. I'm not a fan of open shelves for dust reasons and I'm 5'1" but you have plenty of closed cabinets to store dishes, etc. Not sure what the big problem is with having a couple of shelves at the end of your cabinetry.

" The problem is if i replace the cabinet and shelves on the left, it would be 39” which would look too wide, no? "

Put a 30" cabinet or 2 to make 39". Again symmetry is overrated.

IMO symmetry is totally over rated in a kitchen I think the cabinets should have been closer to the ceiling with much smaller trim above .I would not have done cabinets on thta wall and for sure not that upper corner one

You said your shelves are 24"? I would replace them with 24" double door cabinet.

How about a cabinet with an open shelf at the bottom to hold your toaster oven and closed cabinetry above that

  • PRO

    Then do a 12" and 24" inch cabinet with 3 x 12 inch doors

I would remove everything to the left of the sink -- cabinet and shelves -- so your sink doesn't feel pinched in. And the cabinets around your stove would be symmetrical.

I had issues with this kitchen company, and i agree the cabinets should sit higher with a smaller molding on top to match the original crown molding to the left (which is what i asked for). The hood is low, i banged my head on it few times! its too late now that its all installed, they'll charge me a lot to fix that unfortunatley.

The 3 x 12" cabinets make sense, but wouldnt they look too narrow and makes it look busy? i thought the 15" looked too small

I would love to have that whole wall open because after it was installed, i didn't like how narrow the space above the sink is. I just cant picture how the wall of the stove would look without the upper corner cabinet. would one of you talented people be able to show me what the space would look like?

The kitchen company knows they didn’t do what you asked for regarding the crown molding, that’s why the clunky block at the end and no connection to the molding on the wall.

Regarding symmetry, you will almost never be positioned to look squarely at the sink from several feet away, to see the symmetry, especially because of the angled cabinet between sink and range. Don’t worry about that symmetry. Not a fan of angled cabinets myself but I would keep the one to the left of the range, because of the one on the right.

How high are your cabinets above your countertop?

I agree with @bpath. Leave the angled ones and the flat ones beside them because you don’t want an angled cabinet to be on the end.

It doesn't look like there is a window or anything over the sink, I would remove the cabinet on the left and get longer shelves so they don't look so beefy.

Here is my best attempt at showing that.

While no one is there, leave the shelves empty. When you go to vacation, a quick dusting, then put out coffee mugs, napkin holder, condiments, glasses, bowls, plates etc.

The longer shelves above are definitely an improvement to the way it is now. I would still prefer no shelves, and add more cabinets, but, if you are really wanting shelving, the picture above would work, much better than those skimpy shelves you have there now, that look totally out of place.

Thank you for all the feedback! I'm not sure i like the shelves this way either. Instead, do you think it makes sense if i replace the shelves with a 24" cabinet and remove the 2 cabinets flanking the sink? that'll make the space above the sink more open, but I'll be left with the angled cabinet side open

Could you pls post picture right across sink ? It is hard to see cabinets next to sink on both sides around sink

I don’t have more pictures unfortunately

I think in general, engled cabinet is not left as last one in situation like that. I think in your situation I would just add 24" double door cabinet to replace the shelves and be done. That would resolve the funky situation with crown molding, too.

Also you could consider shelf over the sink but more subtle like on this picture.

Love this! I hate that the space above my sink is so narrow, if it was wider I’d love to use that

How big is your sink? To have an idea about the space between cabinets above sink

    30” sink

Thank you so much! I appreciate you taking the time to look into this for me

Personally, I do not like the look of an angled wall cabinet with nothing next to it. Plus you will have holes on the side of that cabinet from the screws that are holding them together. They might not patch so easily. I would take the shelves down and do more cabinets on the left or an open bookcase if you like the open shelf feeling.

    Good luck

I thought those kind of shelves get mounted using rod dowels or something into the wall or brackets below. But not screwed to cabinets!

The weird box at the crown does not look like an attempt to mate the 2pc with the existing 1pc crown. If it's hiding something and you choose to remove cabinets it will be prominent.

Sorry - I was referring to removing the cabinet that was attached to the corner cabinet - it could leave holes.

Thank you! I like the book shelf idea.

This is what I’m thinking now, please let me know if that will make more sense. The open space above the sink is 24”, which is narrow and really bothers me. I want the space to look more open.
These are the measurements I have: the upper 2 cabinets are 15” each, the shelves are 24” and the space above the sink is 24”.
I’m thinking to get rid of the shelves, move the 2 cabinets together all the way to the left to replace the shelves and add a 6” vertical wine rack next to the angeled corner so the side is not open. That’ll leave me with 42” open space above the sink which will be centered in that space.
The wine rack would look like this

Just got back on this conversation so maybe I'm missing something. But if you remove the 12 inch cabinet on the right of the sink (next to the corner cabinet) and place the above arrangement between the corner cabinet and the 12 inch cabinet on the left, it wouldn't be centered with the sink and I'm not particularly fond of the look.

I think that removing the shelves on the left and replacing with 3 x 12i nch cabinets is a good solution, and doing something like one of the below options would work well in your kitchen. If you choose art, you can place a sconce above.

The picture I posted is only an example of the wine rack Im thinking to add to the right side (only one 6” rack), this way the side of corner cabinet is not exposed.
The cabinets I have now are 15” each not 12”. So this will be the order of that wall (right to left)- corner cabinet, wine rack 6”, 42” open space above the sink, 2- 15” cabinets next to each other. Does that make sense? I’m trying to have the space above the sink more open because I don’t like that it’s only 24”

Would be the same, symetric space on both sides of sink? And where those 2 15" cabinets end at the end in relation to countertop?

The 2 cabinets will replace the shelves, so they’ll start at the end of left side above the countertop. And with adding the 6” wine rack, the sink will be in the center of that open space

I agree 24 inches above the sink is very narrow, should be at least the width of the sink cabinet usually 30 or 36 inches. You don't need to fill the whole wall, sometimes less is more. I think a nice piece of art you like with a sconce above would be a nice touch!

I think perhaps you're trying to squeeze too much into that space. Multiple shelves could start to look cluttered and take away from the open feeling you want. Like Debbi's idea above, what about removing everything to the left of sink and having one or two long shelves that connect to the straight cabinet on the right? Why do you want to remove the straight cabinet?

Or here are slimmer shelves with a break over the sink. You could put a picture light over the art too.

    last modified: 8 months ago

I don't feel that im trying to squeeze so much. I just need the sink to be centered with the open wall. Thats why adding 30" cabinet to the left (replacing the shelves) and a 6" wine rack to the right (covering the angled cabinet) would open up the space above the sink and will give me 42", and so sink will be then be centered.

I'm not planning to add shelves at all at this point. I would install beautiful backsplash and then decide to maybe add art, which is a beautiful idea :)

Is wine custom made or they have in the cabinet line ?

What about ordering a 24” double door cabinet to replace the shelves and then adding glass to the two 15” existing cabs flanking the sink? I thought maybe the glass doors would make it feel more open.

    Something like this?

As others have mentioned, the way they ended the crown into that block looks terrible. I am not sure if this is the right term, but I think they need to ”cope” the cabinet crown to the wall crown. I‘d lose the odd trim piece by the countertop too.

    Cute kitchen!

Thank you for those pictures! The glass cabinets are a good idea, however two issues- one, i already have 2 glass cabinets around the hood, its a small kitchen so it might be a lot. Two, its more open but i'd still have the narrow 24" space above the sink unfortunatley.

As for the moldings. We are going to remove the bottom piece of molding, and ugh i hate the look of the box at the end of crown molding and im asking them to fix that too. I have an appointment with the kitchen company next week to discuss all of this.

To answer the question, im not sure if the wine rack is stocked but i have a feeling its going to be custom.

I agree, that would probably be too many glass doors in a smaller space.

I didn’t realize the sink was 30”, but the space between the cabinets was only 24”. Yikes! That would feel cramped.

I think your idea would work, but what do you think about this idea? Skipping the wine rack and cutting the open shelves down to fit to the end of the countertop.

You could order ”finished end panels” to attach to the side of the angled corner cabinet and the opposite cabinet to look more purposeful. Crown extended to line up with the side panel.

My thought was that I would rather have more head room to the right of the sink as that is your main prep zone. You would then put the 2 - 15” cabinets to the left, centering the sink between between. Then the wood shelves could be cut down to fit whatever length is needed to line up with the end of the countertop. Hope that makes sense.

I couldn’t find a great example, but the finished end panel on the angled cabinet would look similar to this.

Thank you! that could work. Im afraid that the side of the corner cabinet might be damaged after removing the cabinet attached to it. Do you think maybe a book shelf next to the corner cabinet would look nicer than a wine rack? something like this, which has to be more than 6", maybe 8" and i'll adjust the cabinet size to the left to center the sink

^^^ maybe not for books because moisture next to the sink wouldn't be great for books but maybe for some decorative items.

I could use some help deciding on what backsplash would look best. Should i do neutral and stay in the white family, or add a muted hint of color? Also, what size works best for a backsplash? if square (5x5, 4.5x4.5, 4x4) and if rectangular (2x6 or 2x12)? I want it to look timeless, these are some examples of what i like..

Oh, the backsplash! Now that is the fun part. I searched for 2+ years to find the perfect sage green tile for my kitchen. Hopefully you won’t take that long!

Bring home a ton of samples. Then post pictures of them propped up against the wall, so we can see it in your kitchen’s lighting.

I think that dusty blue Cloe tile would be so pretty! But I do admit, I am not a big fan of the all white kitchen (cabs, counters, and backsplash).

I like J Sk’s idea of the skinny shelf cabinet on the end of the corner cabinet. I thought about that, but then I wasn’t sure if it would look odd with your very tall built up crown molding jetting out at the top with nothing but air underneath.

What about the photo below with just floating shelves, crown ends with corner cab.

You would need to order a new skin panel for the side of the cabinet though to hide any damage. Or you could just add a new skin panel, no shelves, and hang a pretty cutting board on the side? Herbs? Or nothing, and let the pendant be the focus.

Well, whatever you decide I am sure is going to look great!

I like the glass fronted cabinets as they are and wouldn't replace with open shelving.

Im not changing the glass cabinets. That wall above the stove is staying as is. Its the wall above the sink that im trying to fix. Replacing the open shelves with a cabinet and create a more open space above the sink, since its too narrow
