I like the idea of an oversized chair or smaller love seat. I would look at incorporating the shelves into TV storage, put the chair in the corner by the window (angled?), and put the shelving/TV on the closet wall, with maybe a pull-out arm on the TV so you can angle it toward your seating. You would have to get NEW bookcases to allow for that arrangement but at least you would still have the storage?

Does your piano fit on the 81” wall? How big is it?

I don’t love a love seat. They are really not comfortable for two people. This room is small and two pieces of clunky seating are going to make it a jumble. How many people actually sit in this room at a time to watch TV?

What about this:

- Piano on 81” wall

- Nice sofa with slender arms, comfortable on 9’10 wall.

- Book case on furnace wall. Leave opening in bookcase for TV. Have TV mounted to an arm. When TV is resting, it sits in the bookcase opening. When it is watched it pulls out and swings to face the sofa wall.

So a to scale plan woud be nice if a music room is the plan then some nice samll scaled chairs you can rearrange to listen to the piano player Take all the books put them in the closet then thta frees up space and also declutters .The tile music room usually means more tha 2 people in there so maybe a better explantion of what you meanIMO the piano on the 9' wall and maybe even the player facing the room if the piano is nice from the back ot angled so the player faces the room The piano stays it gets placed first then see what pieces fit to use the space .

@Kendrah the piano is 54" so it does fit nicely on the 81" wall. It would usually be 2 people watching TV, but 3 people sitting.

• Youngest child likes to watch her shows nestled right up against one parent, and the other parent often joins out of solidarity. Neither one of us is actually paying attention to "Dinosaur Train," so the third person's seat doesn't need to face the TV.
• Or DH and I have adult entertainment (murder mystery or DH playing a video game). In which case sitting close is typical. DH will often sit on the middle seat of our sofa next to me while we watch a show.
• Or very rarely these days, oldest child and her friends hang out in this room when we are hosting large parties. She's busy easing out of the family home now, but it would be nice to have some comfy over-flow seating here for the once or twice a year large gatherings.

@Patricia "music room" is misleading. It's where the piano is, which I play, and youngest child plays. That's a solo activity for each of us. We might bring the guitar down too but that would still be solo. Younger child is on the spectrum and does not tolerate any music except her own. Also, that is a to-scale floorplan, one square = 6".

A mockup of Kendrah's idea. It's more open this way, room to roll out a yoga mat :) We would have to stick to a 6' long love seat and keep it close to the book-shelf wall, unless we're willing to convert to a sliding barn-style door.

Should have mentioned, I can't put the books in the closet, despite the great shelving. The closet is cantilevered out over the garage floor, no supports underneath, no visible bracing to the garage walls. I have serious reservations about how much weight the closet walls can support.

The fewer things in this room the better. Aim for a large sofa instead of two separate seating units. Just because a chair and love seat technically fit in a drawing, doesn't mean they will visually look right or that the walking path between them makes sense.

What about changing the side the door hinges on. Getting a sofa that is 35" deep. The door can open without hitting the sofa. It will only be able to open to a 90-degree angle. You will need to add a stop to the hinges so it doesn't hit the piano.

When people are watching TV or playing piano, they can keep the door closed so it doesn't feel like it is protruding into the room. If you want a lighter feel to it, get a door that has glass in the center.

Door with glass center would feel less cumbersome in the space when open to 90-degrees along side the piano.

It's a good point. A chair probably does make the room too crowded. We should skip that, or use the little blue arm chair that's in the first picture (it's super comfortable). But if we're going with just a sofa, does it makes sense to just keep the sofa on the window wall? On that wall the sofa depth is less important, the sofa width is flexible without needing to adjust the door.

I have never found it comfortable to sit 3 to a sofa, no matter how large the sofa. The middle seat is bad. Younger child will sit there but her goal is to wedge her body tight against one or both parents.

Or maybe a small ottoman that can be a coffee table, or move to the side wall (doorway wall) as an extra seat?

Maybe consider a sectional if you like that arrangement? Use the 81" wall. Put a nice arc lamp in the corner.

Ha! I was definitely thinking of frequently moving that ottoman over to make a sectional L.

Maybe switch the piano and TV shelf in that case as well.

Thanks anj_p and Kendrah! What I really needed was the help in realizing we can't fit both a sofa and a chair. We're going to put the piano on the closet wall, loveseat under the window, and books and TV on the opposite 9'10" wall. We moved the piano this morning, and it makes a nice view from the living room. We're going to take our time shoppign for the right love seat, but it's really exciting to look forward to having a comfy seat in this room.
