Where to stop backsplash?
In the middle of a kitchen remodel and I'm wondering where to stop the backsplash on this wall. This is the only place with floating shelves, so the rest of the kitchen will just have backsplash up to the bottom of the upper cabinets. Should I stop the backsplash at cabinet height, or take it up to the bottom of the first shelf? Or up to the bottom of the crown molding? I'm planning on a white or cream Zellige-look 4x4 tile. Countertops, sink, and faucet will be replaced too.

Thanks for the input everyone, I appreciate it. I think you're right, the backsplash should stop at the bottom of the lower shelf. I will keep the shelves styled simply, maybe a small vintage oil painting, copper pitcher, stack of white bowls, and a plant.
To answer some questions - the granite needs to be replaced because we cut down a bar-height section of countertop so the whole kitchen would be counter-height (see before and after pictures at the bottom). I like the idea of soapstone or black granite (thanks for the photos, Diana), but my husband hates black countertops. We have had them in previous homes and he finds them difficult to keep clean. We have selected dolomite for the stone for our countertops in the color Shadow Storm (honed). We have extensively researched the risks of this material and we are comfortable with the maintenance and risk of scratches/etches/stains:
