butcher block counters would help. Ikea is not expensive. Just oil them regularly...not difficult......you need some interesting warmth in the space.

here's a little darker rich species ...with all the gray and black it helps. 2nd pic..lighter more basic wood block counters. dont rule it out.

The backsplash is a choice made after counters just like wall color too.It also does not go on until the counter goes in I am confused and have no idea what am seeing . The cabinets are way too close to the counter so please explain a bit more and show the floors.

older kitchens did not always have the 18 in between counters and lower edge of upper cabinets. One of my older kitchens had that. A simple painted wall left in the backsplash area with good scrubbable paint would have been fine. sounds like he/she has installed the mosaic splash. This execution is the piecemeal strategy to an older kitchen. So be it. the other way is to remove the cabinets replace with new/ plan better adjustments like dishwasher out of the corner/ a hood/ removal of soffits. Projects ultimately go the way the individual wants. But I'd say Spend less ..get butcher block to add needed warmth at this point

The rug is no longer there. We have ugly yellow and brown linoleum.it will eventually be replaced after the dining room is finished and the 220 gets done so the stove can be moved

The ceramic tile that's by itself will be installed after the stove is moved. What's on the wall is what was here when we purchased home.

My back splash is not up yet. I'm need to figure out my countertop first. Only thing done is the cabinet. Here's a before and after

A plain white epoxy countertop could definitely work, especially on a tight budget! It would keep things bright and modern while letting your backsplash stand out. If you want a bit more depth, you could also consider a light gray or white with subtle veining to tie everything together.

I really wish people would post at the START of reno....and then you'd not have the inconvenience of a dw BETWEEN the range and the sink? A kitchen this size? Is fine with a 30" inch sink base and a single bowl sink.
