Damaged wood plank

Hi,
Here is the damaged engineered wood plank in our kitchen. It’s glued down to the subfloor. We are planning to take this out and replace it with a new plank.

How do we go about ? Is it easier to take the entire plank out and replace a new one or just cut the part that is ripped and insert a new one?

You're going to cut out (carefully) the damaged plan. Cutting off the T&G portion and the new plank will also have the T&G removed. The new plank would get glued down. If these are all random lengths I would not cut any more of a plank than is necessary. If all the same lengths probably cut out the entire pc. Up to you and what you can live with.

^^^What he said is going to be the proper repair. You can try a wood filler repair kit. It doesn't always work out well but its an inexpensive attempt to cover it up.

Thank you. The damage has got worse over time. Initially it was a small cut but we didn’t act on it for a long time. In addition, the robot vacuum runs in the opposite direction of the cut and it made it worse now. So I think it has passed the repair kit stage.

What tools we might need to cut the plank carefully and replace a same size plank in its place?

The installed planks are all of random lengths.

There are many ways to skin cat but the way I would do it would be to use an oscillating saw. Start along the seams to cut the T&G then cut an X over the entire plank. Since its glued down you'll have to chip away at the damaged plank till the subfloor is nice and clean and you'll be ready to install the new plank. You can probably find some good YouTube videos that break down the repair step by step in detail.

@Minardi, appreciate your response and we have always got help from the experts. But please do understand that sometimes you are not able to do it for various reasons and hence seeking help in such forums.

It will still help to understand the effort involved in fixing this to decide what is the reasonable cost/charges to get it done by someone.

I don’t know about engineered hardwood, but I repaired pieces of my oak floor by chiseling out the portions to be replaced.

It’s usually best to replace the entire plank for a seamless look, especially with glued-down flooring. Carefully cut along the edges, remove the damaged plank, clean the area, and glue in a new one. It’ll look good as new.
