help me renovate my backyard!!!!

I’m working on renovating my backyard and need help deciding where to place my garden beds. I originally planned to put them along the long fence line on the north side, but there isn’t as much sunlight there as on the west or south side. Now, I’m unsure how to arrange them in a way that maximizes sunlight while still keeping space for kids to play and other activities.

I really want to create a designated gardening area in the yard, so I’m looking for the best layout that balances function and aesthetics but I’m finding it so difficult due to the shape of the yard.

To help visualize the space, I’ve created two sketches:
• One that includes measurements & existing features like trees, the storage building, and the back porch.
• A second blank sketch that makes it easier to see the yard’s shape and layout.

I’d love any input on how to arrange the beds in a way that works best!

When you say ”garden beds” are you meaning vegetable gardens or ornamental? Huge difference needed for location. For vegetables it seems the sunniest spot is along the north fence along the length from the NE corner up to even with the start of the shed. You don’t say what size the 2 trees on that side of yard are or, the distance from that north fence to the trees so no clue about the shade they might create.

The garden beds are for vegetables and herbs. The two Shumard oak trees aren’t huge yet, but they do create some shade, so I wouldn’t be able to put the beds right next to them. They are about 8 feet away from the fence line, while the mesquite tree(tree closest to the fence) — which also casts some shade—is only about a foot away from the fence.

The sunniest spots in the yard are along the west and east fence lines, but if I place the beds directly in the middle of the yard across from the porch, I’d lose a lot of open space that I want to keep for kids to play. That’s why I’m trying to figure out the best balance between maximizing sunlight and preserving usable yard space.

What about along the SW side of fence to capture both morning & afternoon sun? I wouldn’t like a veggie garden in middle of yard - I’d want it off to the side. That West fence will cast shade to plants too close to it & the south side fence will shade from morning sun if bed too close. That’s why I looked at bed along the north side fence & up closer to shed. The measurement marks / figures aren’t clear to me on which way the 17.5’ & 32’ are meant for. Also don’t know how large of a bed you’re wanting. The big shade trees need to be factored in too.

I agree, I don’t want the garden beds in the middle of the yard, which is why I’ve been trying to figure out the best placement. The north side won’t get much sun because the fence is so close to the house, so I’m not sure it would work well for growing vegetables.

The three beds are each 6 feet long, 2 feet wide, and 3 feet tall.
As for the measurements on the sketch, the 17.5’ is the distance from the storage building to the fence line. The 32’ should actually be 67’—I originally only measured part of the north side instead of the full length from one fence line to the other, which caused some confusion.

I originally wanted to do something like this along the north side of the house, but now that I’m realizing how little sun that side gets. I’m worried veggies won’t grow well, so I’m having to rethink the whole backyard plans.

Nothing will grow on the North side except moss. You need to plant herbs facing south. They need a lot of sun...at least six hours of no shade for herbs and veggies.

So along the North fence the plants would be facing South, assuming the trees don't grow too large and the shed does not block the sun, the plants would get enough sun. Can you move the shed?
