I agree that you don't need a ceiling fan. Do you have enough task lighting in the kitchen? Under cabinet lighting?

I would get rid of the contrast paint trim color.... paint it out to match the ceiling color.

I would paint the beam an earthy color rather than matching the cabinets, but that's just me.

Paint the ceiling the color of the trim in a flat finish. Assuming the lights are on dimmers.

Add a rug.

@elcieg thank you!! i love that rug. the end goal is to add small banquette seating and a small round table. the trim color and cabinet color are old white by farrow and ball.

The existing recessed fixtures need to be swapped out to gimbal fixtures, with as much regress (recessed lip) as you can find, and pointed down perpendicular to the floor. That will reduce the glare.

I personally would not add a decorative fixture(s) off the beam unless the crown was painted to blend into the wall or ceiling. The recessed lighting is fairly inadequate, but depending on fixture style, adding those could help enough to work as is.

Do you need better lighting in your kitchen? I would, but eyes are different. Where do you need better lighting, and do you need task lighting on particular spots or overall lighting? I'd use that sort of inquiry to decide on what lighting to add, if any.

Unless this is purely an aesthetic question, in which case my subjective feeling is the kitchen looks monochrome and rather cold, I'd like some more color and interest - but just having that in the lights will make the rest of the kitchen look odd, I think.
