Help! What should I I put on this ledge/wall

II need some helpI Any ideas on what to put on this pony wall / ledge. there will be base cabinets with a sink there. i am getting soapstone for the counter tops which will be flush with the bottom part but i dont know what to do with the upper part of the ledge. My family room is sunken so it is too high on the other side to make it a bar height counter should i just put soapstone there as well or something else? Cabinets will be Kraftmaid shaker style in the ”cottage” color island will be stained hickory in the ”molassessaws” color my style preference is cottage core farmhouse english cottag

Does it need to be waterproof? Because wood trim painted to match the other trim is very nice.

What is on that run of counter behind the pony wall? Just counterspace? The sink?

If it's the sink, I would probably use soap stone. If it's just counterspace I would probably just match the wood trim in the rest of the room.

Do you need the ledge? Can you just run the electrical to pop-up power outlets and keep the entire run flush with your counter?

You may wish to install a newel post next to the right side of bottom step.
Add a narrow bannister or at least a handrail going up to the kitchen level.
This feature will greatly enhance safety when walking up or down.
You may also consider making the newel post tall enough to reach the ceiling piece above.

I would put soapstone on the top because from the kitchen it will look more cohesive and you won't really notice the top ledge from the family room.

Sink, dishwasher and cabinet butt up to that wall in the kitchen A ledge made more sense because a sink is there and i needed the seperation in the family room because that room is sunk i needed a backsplash to prevent splash over wall unfortunately the height difference was too much to create a bar height ledge

Since the sink is there, definitely soapstone.
