Range wall advice

I'd love some advice on my range wall configuration. Tried to post a few times and got errors.

Photos worked when I added to my idea book! Here's the deal with my project:

    • Major remodel so I can decide where windows go
    • I'm settled on the island-galley general layout after many many iterations
    • Not using ikea cabinets, just tool
    • Large workstation sink, not 2 sinks (I know not popular choice here)
    • I need to finalize the window configuration but have time to keep working on the cabinet details (except where they affect the windows)

Option 1: I like this one with MW tucked next to fridge under cabinets. I use the MW a LOT and want it convenient and not hidden away. Need to make sure the window proportions are nice

Option 2: Architect's recommendation, like the symmetry, concerned the area right of the range won't be useful outside the prep zone

Option 3: KD's recommendation, she likes the uppers next to the range and recommends MW drawer

Option 4: KD's alternative. Filler next to fridge. Deep cabinet and built-in microwave seem more obtrusive to me.

I do not like any of Those . But I would need a to scale floor plan to really advise. BTW no one on here tells you to have 2 sinks we often say one good sized deep stainless singk is the right choice .In personally dislike workstaion sinks once you add all those silly parts you really only 1/2 sink and those are rarely decent sized for real prep.I rarely find architects who can design a kitchen well. I do not like trying to balab\nce a space with one window not centered and a painted hood which BTW will get greasey, and siacolored over time . I have no idea of your style so cannot comment on cabinet style. I ahppen to love Ikea but I never use the planner . If you post a to scale floor plan here show every measuremetn clearly and the size and type of appliances Post her ein jpeg in a comment you will get lots of free advice from pros .

Thanks for responding. My question is predominately around where to put the windows because we need to get the structural plans mostly finalized to move forward (I could have been more clear in my OP). I'm happy to take suggestions on the rest, but much of it is still in draft mode (especially island, base cabs, seating). Are you suggesting to center the window on the room? Or between the fridge and the right wall? What is your suggestion for the range hood?

Like I said, I know many people don't care for the workstation sink--I have read all the threads here on it. I still think it's the best choice for me, but I may reduce it depending on how the island ends up configured. I don't think it affects the range wall.

Bumping my post and sharing option 5: my mom's favorite. Window is center and this has more upper cabinets.

Another consideration is how each option looks from the exterior of the home.

I like your architect's option but with the island flipped so the DW is out of the cooking zone (see Buehl's comment). The more windows the better IMO, as long as you can make the cabinet space work. I also agree with Buehl - even though you're planning a workstation sink you may not use it the way you think you will, so I would make sure you have enough prep space adjacent to it.

Not sure why you're worried about wasted counterspace next to the range (especially with workstation sinks - where the whole idea is that you don't need counterspace). In many of these options, the longest leg of your triangle exceeds the maximum distance between functions (fridge to range is well over the maximum recommended 9'). Your appliances are generally too spread out. More counterspace in the cooking zone isn't necessarily a good thing, especially as you probably won't use or need it there.

And I would nix option 4 right out of the gate as there's no great pantry space with the microwave smack in the middle of it.

    Thanks for the responses!

Not sure I have good options for keeping DW out of the work triangle (DW is on the fridge side of the island, not sure if it's clear in the floor plan). Open to suggestions if you have other ideas!

If I move the fridge more to the center of the island, it seems like an odd spot to the left of the fridge. I'd want a bigger aisle since there's more conflict with the fridge handles. The playroom wall will be new, so I can have a bigger aisle by taking space from the playroom.

If I move the range to the center and the fridge to the back, the fridge is further from the dining room and mudroom. I feel like I'm always walking from dining room to fridge for something, so I'd rather have it on the dining room side.

I'd like the DW on the dining room side of the kitchen to save steps carrying dirty dishes (so many trips from dining room to kitchen every meal).

The range wall is close to my neighbors house, there isn't much of a viewpoint for the windows in the exterior.

Right now there's 48" next to the sink.

The longest leg between fridge and range in the options I've posted is exactly 9 ft, but I take your point that's the max NKBA recommendation. In the architect's plan, I think the lonely cabinet on the far right bothers me a little--I like them clustered together like in option 1.

What about option 6? Range is centered between the uppers and the wall with flanking windows so a bit closer into the triangle, but no sad cabinet at the end.

I like option 6 the best so far. I like having plenty of counter space on both sides of the range. It also looks nice and symmetrical with the two windows flanking the hood.
