Fagus pendula purpurea (dwarf weeping purple beech tree)

We've had this magnificient tree for over 25 years. Recently the bark has begun oozing black goo.

I sprayed the patches that have cracks in the bark, with Daconil Fungus spray, and it goes away for a few days but comes back.

I use tree & shrub 12 month systemic bug killer every year since we first discovered the wolly aphid on the leaves. A few years ago the grass around it got replaced with sod and lots of large roots got cut off. The tree survived and looked normal, but the underground sprinklers were replaced and I think put more water on the tree.

Any thoughts on why these black oozes are happening now?
