Invasive saplings

last month
last modified: last month

We have Hackberry trees everywhere here (N Texas) and I have lots of them growing within my shrubs, perennials, ground cover, and sidewalk/border cracks. Every week, I walk around cutting them — some to the ground, some as far as I can get down.

Is there something I can rub onto the cut area to kill them, but not harm the other plants? It’s not possible to dig them up except in rare cases (if I catch one very early and it’s in an open spot).

I’d be so grateful for any advice.
