Hosta Advice and Garden Plans 2025*********

Look at that name! What is in a name? Everything.

We have remembered 2024 and now it is time to go into 2025. The gardens are waiting on us to come out and do our magic. First what did we learn and what is the advice to new people who read us? Every year my hostas teach me something new or tell me what a bonehead I can be. Share it.

Now plans? What is your goal this year? What did you dream about this winter siting in the recliner thinking about spring? I know mine share yours:

Next: Numbers (new)

Also add any photos you want today of anything.

Ann, be a bit more patient with those pots. I have a couple potted hosta that take their time pipping.

I realized the only thing that keeps squirrels out of my potted hosta is to plant them tight in the pot……no room to dig. It means repotting at some point but I am tired of cleaning up after those critters. I plan to add maybe two more potted hosta instead of annuals

Hopefully Hubbie and I will get garden clean up donein a timely manner.

I know I have said this a few times but I WILL do better taking photos. After two years of health challenges I am looking forward to a better season. Had my first spinal epidural today, another in three weeks. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻😉

The ones that are in the sun are pipping. The ones that are in continuous shade are not. I'll get photos later today. Squash Casserole had 4" pips yesterday, but it's still dark here (I hate daylight savings time), so I don't know what greets me today.

I have been doing some travelling and now am anxious to look at my garden. This year I will try to make things a little easier. At the top of our hill I have a garden, I think that will become a wild flower garden, I will let the Monarda grow crazy and add Brown eyed susans and daisies then let it grow wild. Hopefully will not regret it.

The area we had 16 pine trees which died we planted arborvitaes but I will add some perennials and hostas to the area. Trying to keep it easy (famous last words).

Words of advice, pull weeds before they seed (getting all the roots does feel good). Take time every day to walk around your garden and enjoy it not just work in it. I try to do this every morning and take a picture of something which catches my eye.

Several of mine have not pipped yet. Last year I thought June was a goner last one up, but this year she is already up with gusto. Hostas have minds of their own and the memories of the motherland.

Some are up and others are still dirt.

Everyone is so funny today! The power of getting the roots up is the best, I agree! All my pots are still in the garage. Should I be bringing them out now??? First year doing pots over winter.

I’m really good at keeping my ID tags, but sometimes don’t get my map updated, so I will be scratching my head this year until everything is up. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Plans for this year are to clean roots out of diminishing hostas, Robert Frost maybe Blue Angel. I just dread digging up BA because it’s so big. Also need to move my Japanese Forest Grass because it’s intruding on Blue Hawaii. Only planning on adding small hostas this year.

Sherry, I wish you well with your back issues. I have been through 3 spinal fusions and I know what epidurals are. I hope that they help. 🙏🏽🫶🏼

Debra, I would wait to bring the pots out. we have some colder weather returning again. None of my hosta in the ground are pipping……good reason to leave those pots in the garage for awhile. Check and see if you have pips yet. when they pip I give them a little drink. I have been doing this for about ten years with good success .

Debra and Ann,thanks for the good wishes! I had a spinal fusion 2 years ago for stenosis, that got fixed. dealing with nerve pain now. I know its early but I am getting some relief from the injection already!!

Sherry..how great that your injection is helping already!..👍

I checked the pots on the less convenient side of the garage today..several have pips!..I intended to plant these last summer and didn't get the job done..the soil is low..I didn't fix it since I thought they were coming out of the pots..it was warm so I took them outside to clean up the debris..I gave them a drink..I left them out tonight since it could rain..they'll be coming in soon when the temperature drops..they could be getting a fairy ring 🙁..that's a new problem for me..isn't the solution to split them when I plant?..

I don't think I have any pips outside..

a mini iris..this line of bulbs was planted in late November..I'm so happy they lived..I see them from my kitchen window..

Ann, those iris will be lovely. Cant get myself to plant bulbs anymore, I will enjoy yours. I got a bonus this spring. My neighbor has a big patch of snowdrops in her garden. I now have a small patch in a great place in my garden!

I dont think you have fairy rings in those pots. I have a hosta in the ground for 20? years. It has a huge fairy ring. My choice is to leave it be, it looks wonderful leafed out despite the ring.

Sherry..the iris are adorable..I have more blooms today 💕..

I had a weak moment and bought miniature bulbs in bloom at Walmart last spring..

you're right.the hostas weren't unattractive when they were leafed out..

I'm going to follow Beth's plan "to make things a little easier".."easier" for us is still more outside work than what many people do..we'll always be outside but I want to be a little less overwhelmed..

my daffodils have lots of buds..

    Junes are unfurling..

my bowl planter was covered with debris..I took it outside to clean it..I found pips and what I think is a tiny Clausa..

    Diamond Lake? is growing too..

is there a trick for sharp close ups?..mine aren't as sharp as I'd like..
