Outdated corner sink lighting dilemma

last modified: 6 months ago

My kitchen is outdated, and we’re not ready for a full reno yet. The soffit above my corner sink with recessed lighting is falling apart. Should we rebuild it with new LED lights (we’re DIYers) or remove it and install sconces? If we go with sconces, would two look awkward on either side of the corner sink? Do designers even use corner sinks anymore? I’m hesitant to invest in nice sconces if we plan to move the sink later. Any advice? Thanks in advance!!!

Here is the final rebuild, thanks again for all the feedback:

I know everyone hates corner sinks, but with those windows, I’d consider keeping the sink there, maybe not angled, but in that cool view corner!

Those windows and soffits just cry out for linear LED lights. Get the kind that change intensity and color. Experiment with uplighting too.

I’d lose the louver blinds, use UV film on the glass, then sleek white perforated blinds if needed.

    Really cool space.

I would rip it out for sure and I really dislike corner sinks and you have enough window spaces to allow for a regular sink and still be able to enjoy the view . Once yo are ready fo the redo please come back and we can help with layout . If the redo is quite a long time down the road then repait that soffit for now I do not like sconce lighting even in bathrooms and for sure not in a kitchen

Eventually you'll move the sink so two people can get to it at the same time, even if only to put something in. And you'll replace the counter. Until then I'd add regular A19 form screw-in led bulbs in your existing cans. The 17.5w dimmable 3000K FEIT 4/$10 bulbs at Costco are 17.5w and produce 1600 lumens in a flood pattern. You'll be using the dimmer.

The first step is looking into the possibility and ramifications of removal of the soffit, reparing the wall and potentially effecting the window framing. The lighting decision: sconces will look odd and not provide enough light and then potentially having to update the ceiling lighting.

The better option would be to repair, replace, or box in and add a number of small directional LED pot lights and consider what could improve ceiling lighting.

Last thing to consider, when you are redoing the kitchen down the road, the windows might be crying out to be replaced and the soffit removal then will make more sense and as you mention, sink may not even be there.

I love corner sinks looking out the window(s).

The built up soffits allow the recessed fixture housings and cabling to be hidden. I would guess the header is solid, possibly even steel seeing all the cantilevers outside. So mounting wall mounted fixtures (what you are calling sconces) on this header might not be feasible without a soffit. You won't know until you remove some.

For the best task lighting over this counter, you would need a wall mounted fixture with an extended arm, but IMO that would not be appropriate for this corner.

I would say the better scenario both functionally and aesthetically from these limited pictures is having a "soffit," maybe not so bulky, with linear lights both on top and below. They would be accent lighting and do need to limit the lumens as the closer they are to the glass the reflection becomes a detriment. It would continue the uplights it looks like you have already on top the cabinets. Then, along with that, recessed ceiling fixtures for the main task lighting for the counters/cabinets.

At this point, changing these fixtures doesn't move the needle until you have a full remodel with all lighting addressed. Just repair the wood enclosures.

Lori - I'm going to second apple pie order's request - I would love to see whatever you decide to do when it's finished. I would love to see the whole kitchen - having such large corner windows is nice. I think that I wouldn't mind a corner sink, if I also had nice windows in the corner.

I believe that this is Chispa's former kitchen:

Here are some pics of the update, which took much longer and was more frustrating than anticipated...but I'm pretty happy with the result.
