Cupola challenge -

Finishing an attic bonus room with large cupola on the roof. Want to leave the cupola open to let light in the room vs cover with drywall or a hatch for access. The wood across opening is needed for the rod helping to secure the cupola and to tighten it. I think the wood across the opening should go all the way across the opening. (Looks better)
Has anyone seen something like this?
Not sure how to frame it? We will paint inside the cupola white and the cross pieces. Any ideas for framing this?

No, I’ve not seen anything quite like this before. This would be like a skylight but you wouldn’t see the sky and the tunnel would show exposed beams. Are you thinking you’d wall the sides in or leave exposed to the attic?

The cupola lets in a lot of light. Thinking of framing the opening and it would have wood, like a beam across the opening to attach the support rod for the cupola. sides will have walls - not exposed to the atttic. The room is getting drywall now and trying to imagine how this can be done and not impact the integrity of the roof trusses.

PPF - my apologies for not describing it well. I have never seen anything like this. I don't know how to best describe it. I think we need to have a framed opening for the drywall, then a drywall chute to the cupola, (which is tall and about 500 pounds). Thinking a beam across the opening can handle the support rod. We are in a coastal area with high winds.

It would be challenging to sheet rock around all those beams. You’d want to finish with some type of trim where any wood passes through the sheet rock wall.
