I will be updating the standing garage. I am trying to figure out what to do with the concrete landing next to it. Currently you can see in the photo there was a covered Pergola, which is now deteriorated. I will be cutting some of the trees in that area. One of them grows through and around the far right corner of the pergola. My initial thought was to cut the tree down but it’s a beautiful yellow tree in the fall and I’d like to possibly keep it depending on what the tree guy says and how I’d like to design it. I’d I’d really like it to feel more open and airy. Shade is important to me. I don’t want to be sitting in the sun.

Do I replace the existing with an open pergola? My issue with that is then there won’t be any shade. If I put a pergola with a roof then it feels enclosed to me. Should I not replace it at all and just get a huge umbrella? Please help with ideas that are budget friendly.
