Tray Ceiling Question

Our expanded bedroom remodel space will be 11’4” x 15’10”. We currently have 7’6” ceilings and our contractor has determined he can raise the height by putting in a tray ceiling. How will this look with the rectangle shape of the room? My other choice is to have the ceiling go up in a cathedral style then flatten out into the wall. Similar to half a barn style ceiling. I’m not sure about that at all.

The method for converting structural roof framing that didn't account for a tray or vault/cathedral originally, is very different between the two. Trays can usually be accomplished relatively easily, and a rectangle shape works perfectly fine with it. The proportion of ceiling height should fit with the room size and rest of house.

A vault (sloped one side) or cathedral (slope mirrored both sides) is more complicated to convert. Again the proportion of ceiling height and probably more of the overall style of house should factor.
