Attn: interior design tips desperately needed in this open concept!!

Hey everybody, I have missed the Houzz community! My hubby and I are relocating to Florida for his new job and we are now empty-nesters. The Florida vibe is different, especially since we have purchased a pool house with a retention pond, so I’m going for a coastal cottage inspired decor which will be fun to decorate, but in the meantime, this house has a completely different layout than I’m accustomed to. It’s completely open and we will need to put our dining room table in the same space as our couch and TV, etc. We also will have a little breakfast nook type area in the actual kitchen where I plan to use my casual oak round table which also goes with my coastal beachy theme. I’m including pics of our new house first, it is staged with all the cliché beachy type furniture. But I want you to get an idea for the layout. Our old couch is going to our daughter’s house on campus next year so the fun part is ordering new furniture this week as well. 😃We move into our new house over Easter. Would love your ideas regarding how to set up the living room being as there will also be a dining room area in that same room. i’m overwhelmed with trying to select a reclining couch my husband insists on a reclining couch, even though I think it won’t look as nice, but I can match up some chairs and such, I’m not sure if I should do a sectional or do one reclining couch against the wall and maybe a loveseat to make an L shape? And then if you look, there are some alcove windows where I hope to put maybe a couple of swivel or reclining separate chairs that don’t completely match the new reclining sofa, I’m leaning for a white leather, but my husband doesn’t want me to get leather because I have too cats who are not declawed. But I’ll take care of that. I told him I am so excited to read your ideas as I know this community is so talented and creative with fascinating ideas! I’m a writer/editor by trade so you’d think creativity would come easily for me but when it comes to setting up & decorating my house, I’m always overwhelmed so I’m all eyes and ears to your thoughts & tips re: furniture, etc. for context, you’ll see a different house with different pictures in there. That’s our current house and my current decor because a lot of of that furniture is coming over with me. I have two buffets and some mirrors and lamps that I will bring with me. Anything you care to share would be greatly appreciated!! And thank you!!

PS I haven’t figured out how to do the editing so I wanted to take out the part that said I have old pictures in because it wasn’t letting me add more. Also, sorry if there are some misspelled typos, I was doing talk to text and it’s late! 😴

No one can really help you Janis unless you post a floor plan with dimensions. I would urge you to wait on a sofa purchase until you figure out a plan. You are going to get the best suggestions if you post photos (with sizes) of any furniture, rugs, etc that you plan to reuse. Then it’s very easy to come up with suggestions.

    "The Florida vibe is different"

We've had these discussions here before, but I don't agree with this view. I am using most of the same furniture from my CA house in my FL house. I don't decorate any differently than I did when we lived in MA. My style is transitional and it works in FL too.

So don't decorate so differently from what is "your" personal style, to try to fit some imagined idea of what you think the "FL vibe" is. "FL vibe" doesn't exist! I've been inside of FL houses decorated in all types of styles.

The last 15 years Florida model homes looked just like those everywhere, with white kitchens, marble-look counters, light gray walls and mostly gray and white furniture. Trends are moving to warmer colors and you are starting to see color/patterns in upholstery when you visit the local mid/high end furniture stores.

The difference in FL is that you have more sun and light and your views might include pool, pond, golf and/or ocean/gulf and tropical landscaping.
