Kitchen layout for old farmhouse

Trying to optimize our kitchen. We bought an early 1800’s farmhouse that was last remodeled in the 90’s. I moved the washer and dryer to a new laundry area, opening up a significant amount of space. We recently brought home a baby girl and had the opportunity to get a larger fridge so while I’m off work until July we’d like to update the kitchen. I measured and sketched the kitchen and adjacent areas for context. The appliance sizes are listed as well. We’re considering taking down the wall between the kitchen and dining room, it’s not load bearing. We’re also planning to build out the old attached barn to use as a pantry, mudroom, and canning kitchen, possibly a 1/2 or 3/4 bath to get the current one out of the narrow dining area. We’re a bit sleep deprived and although I’ve got ideas, I don’t feel like I’m coming up with the best layout options. Hoping this group can help.

I've never seen someone post: new baby -- time to remodel the kitchen.

Many would prefer a kitchen better connected to the living area.

What's the rest of the house like?

What about the attached barn? What will it take to turn it into living area?

The living room is immediately below what’s drawn, through the opening shown between the entry and basement stairs. It’s a small house, it’s 3-4 steps from the kitchen to the living room. Living room has our woodstove and windows with views across the valley, it’s not moving. The attached barn is also 1800’s, it’s a utility space, not a living space. We’re working to make the best use of the space we have with moderate investment now, knowing we may do a more comprehensive addition/remodel in 10 years or so.

L shape or U shape kitchen layout, perhaps depending on how much you dislike corner cabinetry. I can see how taking down the wall between kitchen/dining would be nice and give you more flexibility.

This is what we have right now. We have gaps from removing the laundry area and putting a larger fridge there. The wire shelving and open shelf under the island aren’t very child-friendly, so it’s time to optimize the layout with new cabinets and countertops. Thankfully the walls are in excellent condition and there are outlets everywhere, so if we keep the sink in the same location, we have no reason to open the walls, except possibly removing the one to the dining room.

Ok, my suggestions are to put the fridge where the pantry is now, then DW, sink, trash under sink or around the corner. On the carport wall extend cabinetry, range with hood, and put a pantry cab at the end. Or, turn the corner for the pantry cabinet on the barn wall. Since you mention canning I think it makes sense to put pantry by that area. Remove the wall and put a SMALL island, experiment with turning it 90 degrees from current position (lay it out with tape or boxes on the floor). Maybe microwave in the island.
