Have you already purchased the new sofas? Did you measure beforehand? They look to large & tall for your space. First thing I would do is declutter the entire area.

Draw us a floor plan with measurements please.

the backs on the new furniture is very high compared to your existing pieces.

Pretty large for your space. I would change the light gray paint coloring. to a lighter color.

Personally, I think the rug is too much when you say you want to 'tie it all together'

Are you up for eliminating some of the other furniture & decor in the space? more photos, for sure, and measurements?

IMO I would keep what you have. The new sofas are a step down. They have a higher back and will change the total appearance of the room.

I'd advise you to purge this room. There's too much 'stuff' in this room. I have adjusted this half of your room.

IMO the rug needs to be replaced. Here are two options.

In my opionion this should be your layout for the room.

Don’t have a reply button but I’ll address questions then get better pics when I get home. Quick measurements from plan attached, the living area is 14’x18’ and at least 4’ from back of couch to back of barstool (maybe more).

Couch is purchased, delivery tomorrow. They are about 3” higher than previous extra large loveseats. We measured and it’ll fit. The fireplace sits in corner which made these two existing love seats sit at a wider angle than 90 degree. Also, perspective is off due to able of photo, room is fairly large, at least 4’ between back of couch and barstools.

New couches are not as deep but they recline like the light ones.

Painting is the only option that’s hard as there is no “stopping” point as the corners are rounded and walls just flow to another room. Considering moving so don’t want to paint a huge chunk of the house.

Ok with moving furniture out. Rug must stay as it’s a Persian 14’ x 10’

Might be easier to see once we move out old couches and then I can take some more pics.

Please don't use that layout with the obtuse angle position of the sofas.

I see a great open space that is visually broken up into so many cluttery pieces, small shelves, knick knacks, etc. The decor changes you want should follow serious decluttering:

--Remove every single last thing on top of the kitchen cabinets. It's all in view living and dining areas, which have their own clutter. Later on, tackle the kitchen counters.

--Remove the dangly thing in dining space, containers on window sill, paddle thing over the window, and big floor vase--more obstacles and visual clutter.

--Remove these pieces: the too small cabinet under TV. Replace with low, wide console cabinet. Keep the top fairly clear of "stuff." Your TV wall should look something like this:

--I'm with the Pros that new leather sofas don't harmonize well ith your rug. The backs are way too high for the space. Sorry, but recliner sofas you picked do not in any way work with the rug you've said you have to keep. If you must have huge, too high sofas, then they should be in cream if you want them to go with rug. Better, keep those you have for now until you make changes so you can create a much improved room. Then look for better proportioned, TV watching sofas--maybe in gray. Only get one. Replace a second sofa with comfy reclining swivel armchairs.

--Since you like your rug, get a clear topped coffee table.

--I'm never crazy about gray, but if you like it then replace dark ivory curtains with white curtains. The ivory ones bring down the space. Hang them from ceiling to floor.

Great advice. A (decluttered) cabinet/console that’s about 25% wider than the TV can be nice. You don’t need much else on that wall.

I know you said the rug is staying, but I like the one in your photo with the sofas.

The colour of your new sofas is nice with your rug. Your loveseat at an angle how you have it now doesn't look right and I don't think you can place the loveseat in front of the window wall since there's a patio door but perhaps at a right angle on the opposite wall in front of what seems to be a hallway could work (not your sofas but just for the layout look).

I agree that you have too much stuff. If you have the energy, I would take everything moveable out of the kitchen and living room. Move it into a study or dining room. Decorative items, art, small tables, lamps, fireplace decor, etc.

Then shop your dining room and the rest of the house and only put back the things that you really love and need. Lamps, end tables, some art, etc.

You could easily edit out 75% of the things in your kitchen and living area and it will still look warm and cozy.

I can't picture the camel color with the current rug, but hopefully it will work! Since you mentioned a possible move, this would be the time to start purging. There is just too much "stuff" in this room and the kitchen. I think a purge will help a lot with a refresh for the rooms. Post when the couches are in place and hopefully they will fit in a L shape.

The rug is lovely, but isn’t there another room you could move it to? I just don’t think it will play well with your new loveseats.

Absolutely paint the walls; gray doesn’t go with anything here. After all, you say you wanted a refresh and removing the gray will do that.

@lisadv glad you caught that. I was hoping the rug was going to change because it's not going to work well with the new color furniture. Perhaps it can be moved to a bedroom. Even if it would fit, it won't work colorwise in the dining room either.

@dahll is another room a possibility for the rug? Is the 3" height difference in the new furniture the seat height or the back height? The backs look much taller than 3" difference.. If you decide they don't work in your room/with your rug, are they returnable?

• unfortunately, rug won’t fit into any other room as it’s too big. Master bedroom would work if it didn’t have carpet.

• Hubby loves them. They are quite comfy.

Is there room to float the loveseat in front of the slider?

I would try to move the rug towards the kitchen and entry. The corner of the carpet that is now in the middle of the fireplace would be at the edge closest to the blue box, maybe farther.

Then I'd put the sofa on the carpet on the same side where it is now, not just on the edge of it. Do the same with the loveseat, in front of the slider. Then you should have room for a swivel club chair where the love seat is now.

Here's a rough mockup of how I hope the rug can be positioned.

• I get what you’re suggesting. I’ll try tomorrow when we have a dolly to help move around, they’re very heavy. It will create a larger gap by sliders (we use&leave open) as well as encroach in kitchen entry.

@okychick - actually 4” difference in height from floor to top, I think it’s my bad photo taking angle. Compare it next to lamp table.

For wall paint, rounded corners and no obvious place to stop as one room merges into another. What color and where to stop??

As also suggested by others, is floating the 2-seater in front of the slider possible?

-it’s possible but seems like it would really block the sliders which we use, leave open quite a bit.

Are ALL the walls gray? If so, don’t stop painting a new color at the corners.

@littlebug yes, whole house is 1 color, not sure we’re ready to invest in repairing the entire house. Might move as well :)

Painting will be a big job/expense and I honestly don't think it would make enough of a difference. Unfortunately, the rug and couches just don't blend. Easiest fix would be a new rug but I know you don't want to do that.
