Contemporary Eclectic Preppy Style?

What does that mean? Can you post an example of it?

Brandy, your inspo pic provides so much instruction that will help you get your space right.

1. ) First think of lighting. Your insp pic has a crisp overexposed lighting to it. Your room feels dark. What color bulbs are you using and where else can you add light?

2. ) The light grey run in your insp pic grounds the eclectic prints and color and brings cohesion. It takes a super skillful hand to mix prints. Give yourself a head start with a more neutral grey rug. If you've gotta have print in your rug go for something like this:

3.) Get a sofa with thinner arms and feet, and possibly a tight back. This sofa is going to look like a tank in your space. Streamlining the furniture shapes in the room is another thread of cohesion that will then enable you to get more wild with color and print. Note the inspo pic again for seating shapes.

4. ) The colors of the sofa, ottoman, and chairs in your inspo pic are really pretty plain. It is the artwork, pillows, and accessories that make this room pop preppy. So yes - solid color sofa, black and white striped chair, and a second simple white and navy or white and green chair will be your friend.

I love this chair for an eclectic look. It will take any kind of preppy pillow and pattern. It has thin arms so they won't take up a lot of visual space.

Think of the wall art verision of the rug you like. Hang it on your wall - better there than as a rug! :)

5. ) Get everything in place first and THEN decide if your fireplace still really bothers you. It is sticking out now, but I bet is really receeds into the background once you have your fun preppy look in place.

Keep your eyes open for a great bamboo arm chair that you can paint green! Doesn't get more preppy than that!

It’s important to move forward in stages as this look is not easy to achieve. Highly suggest deciding on the couch first (I don’t think navy is a great choice). Look to create a connection with your rug and the chairs under consideration. It will have a major influence and once in room you’ll be able to better decide on appropriate chairs, fireplace finish, curtains and the last decision, wall color. Adding gold accents can be done slowly: lighting, cushions, and even a coffee table.

Hi all...I am floored with happiness and excitement from all these amazing suggestions. (My daughter had a terrible emergency which turned our lives around the last few weeks, so apologies from being so mia. A few responses to so much great feedback .

The only piece I already bought, which seemingly was not a great idea but I'll have to make it work now, is the grey rug with the bright flowers/colors I posted. The comment amount NO navy couch has changed me . I'm listening to youand lighting is critical and one of you hit the nail....the room has a light switch even but zero lights have ever been on the ceiling. Weird. Maybe first I'll just pay an electrician....we spend a ton of time in here. The "style" is made up my own . I love patterns and eclecticpops and colors, but it has to be cohesive and chic. That's why those on a base of classic neutral pieces provides some essential juxtaposition. I kind of feel like I have to do grey on the walls ONLy because of the run and otherwise I'll end up with a hodgepodge room(I'm sure many think it's inevitably way, but I'm determined . I can't thank you all enough.....even the "WTF".....I love your honesty;). You all deserve a raise. Thanks!!

Maureen I'm listening to you and before walls or fireplace, which was my plan, I'll first pivot to a couch. (My current couch is grey, which now might have to be my couch for the room($ challenges now)+
