Spring 2025 Raleigh Plant Swap

The 2025 Raleigh Spring Swap will be held Saturday, May 3 at White Deer Park - Pine Shelter in Garner. The shelter is reserved from 10 am til 1 pm. Swapping will begin around 11. Everything will be the same as in past swaps except that it is in May and earlier in the day.

As in the past we have no rules, you are free to haul anything gardening related to the swap and give it away - this includes live plants, seeds and bulbs, cuttings, pottery, tools and equipment. One thing that sets our swap apart from others is that we do not require you to even bring plants in order to participate. We always have way more plants than people. If you feel guilty taking something for nothing you can always bring food for the potluck picnic.

If you need help finding the place, google: White Deer Park Pine Shelter

I will be bringing a few plants, mostly tropicals, nothing fancy. I also have some large decorative items that need a good home (actually, just a home, I don't care if it is good!). I have a vintage/antique metal baby bath basin with stand; a multi-tier ornate rusted metal wire plant stand; and a wooden planter box thingy on legs. I will try and get good photos of them. I need nothing in exchange. A new plant would mean I have to murder one of my existing plants to find room for it. The last two items are big enough that they will need a truck or van to get them home.

See ya there!

John, do you have Lochroma. Mine didn't start from cuttings earlier.

Yay, I'd like to come this year. Haven't been in a couple of years.

Screenwriter - I have my purple flowering one (Iochroma cyaneum). I didn't start any cuttings this winter but I can snip a bunch and you can try again. Keep them warm and let them dry out a bit between waterings if using media, or just plop them into a cup of water. It can take a while.

    Iochroma cyaneum

We are developing a plant bed "Heuchera Palette" where various-colored Heucheras are arranged in a circular layout. So far we have a few very dark (black!) shadows of purple and bright yellows. So we are looking for intermediate tones: greys, blues, greens, orange/reds. We have an excess of light yellow/chartreuse tone to trade.

    Other trades available:

    Arum italicum

    Arundo donax 'Peppermint Stick'

    Iris ensata 'Variegata'

Iris japonica white or pale blue flowers

    Orostachys furusei

    Sabal minor

    Saururus cernuus

    Sedum acre

    Sedum makinoi

    Sedum reflexum 'Blue Spruce'

    Vinca major 'Variegata'

    Viola sororia

John, do you happen to have any more Paw Paw plants you are willing to get rid of?

My mother and I will be there. I plan on bringing a bunch of weird stuff again, might even have a few apple tree seedlings if anybody is interested.

Are you still growing any goumi/golden autumn olives? I'm a new gardener but love growing things outside of the norm and would really appreciate the opportunity to get a few of these nitrogen fixers to the garden. My uncle is Ozzie Coor and I'm trying to impress him with species he's not familiar with! Thanks

Rock Wilson - I have three types of Goumi. They are difficult to propagate. Air layering is the only method that works for me. I can start the process but it will be months from now before they are ready to hand over. Can you wait? I can bring you some cuttings to try.

Citrus - I can dig some for you. The variety I have is 'Sunflower'. You will need a non-related plant to get fruit. They are weird about rooting. I dig the suckers usually in February. No matter how big and robust they are, they never have roots. I cut the main root from the mama tree to the sucker and pot the sucker up and leave it outside under the pawpaw thicket. In the spring that potted sucker will sprout leaves and fill out like a regular plant - but wait! no matter how healthy it looks, they rarely have any roots. It usually takes a full year before they develope their own roots. I didn't dig any pawpaws this past winter. I can dig a few and bring them, but you will need to baby them for at least a year to get healthy plants. I see a few small trees in the woods where the squirrels have "planted" them. They may have roots - I'll bring what I find. Heck, I can bring you a squirrel too!!

If any has some mountain mint they need to thin out I will be glad to take your thinnings.

I’ll have some very young Bloodgood Japanese maples, Hellebores and maybe some Japanese painted ferns.

Thank You, John!! But.......I will have to pass on the squirrel, I have enough of the little tree rat varmints myself! LOL

Karen, I have potted up 'Evita' for you although they have not started to grow yet.

Val, thanks for remembering, and I'm looking forward to being there on Saturday. I remember that I was going to bring you Arisaema triphyllum. Are you still looking for that?

  • PRO

Yes, I would love it, Karen.

Screenwriter, since you say "also", does it mean that you have some Heucheras as well or are the three items in addition to your earlier list?

The three plants all sound interesting.

    We also have:

    Colocasia macrorrhiza

Colocasia 'Royal Hawaiian Aloha Oe' (from Ralph)

    hardy Brugmansia (cream flowers)

    Cylindropuntia imbricata

    Screenwriter,

I probably won't be able to make it to the swap this time.
But would you be interested in exchanging cuttings of Gertrude Jekyll for those of Orchid Romance?
And Evita for cuttings of Sanihaff?

I also have chrysanthemum Cathy's Rust and another which is pink in color. And Aster mongolicus 'Hortensis', which I would like to exchange for the ginger 'Daniel Weeks'

    nchomegarden,

Your swap would be great for all the plants, but I already have Aster 'Hortensis.' Gertrude is a rooted cutting. Does Orchid Romance root easily? Anyplace we could meet if you can't make it Saturday?

Evita has not come up yet, so I would have to give it to you in the fall.

I do not know if Orchid Romance roots easily. I have put a couple of cuttings out to root about a week ago. Looking at the vigor of the plant, I suspect it roots easily.

I live in Cary. You are welcome to come here, if you want to see what else you might like.

I also have moringa seedlings, Datura 'Double Blackcurrant Swirl' seedlings, tithonia seeds, sunflower seeds, cuttings of varous tropical jasmines, night blooming jasmine, passiflora caerulea, Major wheeler honeysuckle, Caldwell Pink rose (roots very easily) and several other roses, figs, etc.

If not, we could meet near Brier Creek, as I suspect that might be somewhere in the middle.

Thanks again to whoever brought the yuccas to the swap years ago. They are sending up flower spikes now; they have been just remarkable in the past. Thanks.

If you hover on your profile at the upper right, you should see several options and one of them should be your messages.

JJLM, I just potted up some Camellia sinensis seedlings for the general swapping so you should be able to find them there.
