Clover fixes nitrogen, which is good. But if clover grows too aggresively , it can compete for all the other nutrients, air and water, which is too much of a good thing. Oxalis, which looks like clover, grows in my rose pots…I don’t believe it even fixes nitrogen, but has pretty yellow flowers.

I’m battling lots of clover in mine as well this year. And some alyssum that keeps self seeding all over. I have it growing everywhere—sidewalk cracks, empty pots, used pots....good thing it smells nice cuz I can’t get rid of all of it.

I was able to get rid of the first round of clover and dandelions by topping off my pots with more soil and mulch but I’m too lazy now.

Also keep getting unwanted critters digging in my pits looking for worms and grubs so they kill the alyssum and clover, and occasionally my new basal shoots too sadly.

Oh dear yes i put down allysum seed when we mived here as a filler and it is crazy ! haha ill never be rid of it . i do like it till it gets ratty . oh well its here now !

i could top it off woth soil i guess ! Im sure my roses would appriciate it .

Yes, I just manually dig them out. I do like love this hoe, weeds see it coming and almost jump out of the dirt!

I get two different types of oxalis weeds in my garden. The first one is taller with larger yellow flowers... it's what we used to call "sourgrass" as kids and we chewed on the stems. That's easy to pull out, and I get it in the ground in the spring. But the other one is much lower growing and not as brilliant green, and is the one that shows up in my pots. This one is very invasive (rhizomes) and you need to use your garden knife to really dig a hunk of soil to get rid of it. And you may need to do it a second or third time. It tends to wind around the base of the rose in the pot. I'd definitely not just smother it, because it will just get thicker. Do you have a picture to see which one you have?
