The way to avoid that is to plant high, so the rootball is slightly elevated above the planting hole. The soil is then mounded slightly to cover the exposed edges.

FWIW, I have planted many kangaroo paws for seasonal color and as long as the soil is freely draining, they have never had an issue. Other than not surviving winter 😫
