Garage conversion

last month

Help! We are converting a one bay garage into a guest bedroom, bath and small kitchenette.

I need help with replacing the garage overhead door with either a french door or window to match the rest of our home. Any idea what would look best?

We will be adding a new garage door on the left side also.

There are garage doors that appear to be French doors

In general, people like privacy for bedrooms, so I'd so a door and a window.

First is it even posible without a total tear down and rebuild most garages are not built to be living space . How is the plumbing and heating going to happen ? Where I live this would only be accomplished with a total tear down and it would probably include the garge on the left too. The driveway as it is will always make that space look like an after thought .How often do you need a guest space I guess is the question. The type of windows and doors is decided after the plan is approved as to the build. I might be thinking the space next to the house but is it tha actual garage with the door that you are planning to change ?

Am thinking the new bedroom wall would benefit from being mostly solid. So will suggest windows instead of French doors. Will even suggest that the windows be kept to a smaller size as that new wall might end up being the bed wall. A question though - how do you get from the garage on the far left to the rest of the house?

And the only way it will look like it wasn't a garage to begin with, is to jackhammer the asphalt and replace with planting beds. That is the important step most people skip.

Have you gotten approval for this yet? Garages usually are not built like houses and have to have extensive remodel or torn down and rebuilt to be able to be used as living spaces. I agree with Chispa above, the blacktop needs to be removed in front of the garage you are converting, or otherwise it does look like a garage yet, even though it may not be.

Is it the right garage that will be a guest space? Why does it need an outside access? I would be concerned that if the door is too big/much/stately it would be confused with the front door. I would probably door a simple door painted the same color as the siding and add a nice window.
