Help with using Mixol

last month

Pros, please don’t come at me! I’m trying to learn :)

I’ve been trying new finishing techniques on a pine dining table. The finish is drawing more orange than I anticipated (I know, I know - it is pine! LOL).

I can live with it vs sanding it all down again but a woodworker friend suggested I add green Mixol to the first coat of polyurethane to tone it down a bit and then follow with additional coats of poly that aren’t tinted.

Ignoring whether it may or may not achieve the desired effect, I have two questions:

  1. Mixol says to clean with soap and water. Will it mix in polyturethane or should I be using a water-based finish?

  2. is Mixol okay to use on a dining table? I figured yes, especially considering I plan to do additional coats of poly that don’t have it mixed in and once it cures, it’s all sealed in anyway.

Final question - if this is truly a horrible idea, are there any other options that can do a green hue to balance out the orange?

Thank you

What does the Mixol website say? What does your woodworker friend say?

The finish is drawing more orange

What is "drawing more orange"? What finish are you using?

The website does say it mixes in all finishes but nothing about safety and use.

My woodworking friend uses it for things that would never see food so wasn’t comfortable commenting on safety.

The table has regular oil-based wiping stain on it. It was a custom colour blend that I was playing around with. Looks amazing on some sections but then as is the nature of pine, it looks fairly orange in other sections. I don’t believe it’s a sanding issue - I think it’s just the natural variation of pine.

And the knots especially do have an orange tone.

When you blend color into a clear, you are making a toner. This is used often to add color that can be built up in layers. It's typically sprayed.

I do have a sprayer that I can use. If I’m building up in layers, I start with a very low concentration of colour?

" if this is truly a horrible idea, are there any other options that can do a green hue to balance out the orange? "

The only horrible idea is surfing the net for validation of not following mfgr's instructions.

" The website does say it mixes in all finishes but nothing about safety and use. "

I'm throwing the BS towel on this. Ever product retailed in the USA requires mfgr supply MSDS and they are as easy to view as typing in a search.

They are easy to find, but they are not written in layman’s terms. I rely on the plain language statements that are written on a product label to understand my risks. This product doesn’t have that and the MSDS contains information and terms that I don’t understand.

Sometimes Houzz users have been incredibly helpful. This isn’t one of those times. Thanks for the demeaning and discouraging reply.

Copy and paste the terms you need explanations on.
