Podophyllums are in the Berberidaceae family so not a close association with the Stapelias.

Agreed no relationship between the plants. It was just a combination of my first sight of the leaves looking so much like the 'Carrion flowers'. Then to discover they also smelt of carrion. Convergent evolution in full swing.

Interesting. I've always known that they were in the milkweeds. I've always considered the Stapelia, Huernis, Caralluma, etc to be grouped within the Stapeliae. I'm not 100% sure that was technicaly correct, but there you go.

Meanwhile taxonomy advances and plants suddenly 'change address', hopefully in a better understanding of plant relationships.

I always looked, before DNA analysis, at plant names as being based on some set of criteria, based on morphological characteristics. My faith in the system was shattered when David Hunt brought out the NCL. The amount of lumping didn't appear to have any real system guiding it.

This was confirmed, for me, when I looked up Cintia knizei, which I had recently acquired. Hunt had renamed it as Rebutia cintia, but noted

R. neumanniana was a member of Weingartia, and was, I believe, renamed by Hunt, based on the fact that it was the most southerly of the Weingartia and the only sp found in Argentina .

Cintia, Weingartia and Sulcorebutia all show a close relationship, and I'm happy with that as a clade. However, POWO now lumps most of the species in Weingartia. Don't agree!! Excessive grouping can be lumping under another name. :-)))))))

In the US at least, the delavayi hybrid P. 'Spotty Dotty' is way more readily available (though hardly 'common') but I defer to GG's expertise. They look similar to me.

I did see 'Spotty Dotty' but leaf patterning didn't look similar enough.

The Podophyllum is the hybrid 'Spotty Dotty'. P. delavayi has more segmented leaves with more nodes. The patterns on both species are very similar. No doubt P. delavay was one of Spotty Dotty's several parents.
