Critique my kitchen! Renovation coming

last year

Hi! I have been looking at this until my eyes are crossed. I'd love harsh honest feedback or suggestions for improvement.

I'll add photos of the current floorplan as well as actual pics and my latest idea.

Notes for my idea:

-removes butler pantry load bearing wall

-removes the window above current desk “study nook”, which is too long anyway for having a standard cabinet under it

-changes second staircase entry to enter into dining room instead of kitchen

-would need to slightly adjust doorway into kitchen from dining to accommodate 24 in cabs (currently about 22 in, desk in butlers pantry is shallower than kitchen cabs) OR do custom drawers on the south end shallower than the sink and dishwasher and have a change in depth there

-I realize the prep table is a barrier between stove and sink. I think it would be ok? Would have a few stools tucked under. It would be short enough relative to the stove and sink wall length that its easy to get around. Though about using south wall and having an “L” but doesn’t seem worth the cabinetry cost to gain about 30 in (net gain – because would have dead corner), esp when theres enough space in the “galley”?

Stove wall (154 in) from north to south: 36 in paneled fridge, ~22 in drawers, 36 in induction stove, ~22 in drawers, ~36 in appliance garage. Stove hood alcove over drawers.

Sink wall lowers from north to south: 24 in dishwasher, 30 in sink, ~100 in of lower drawers divided into 3 sets

Sink wall uppers from north to south: 20 in glass upper re-use from butlers pantry, window above sink, 20 in glass upper reuse from butlers pantry, furniture piece/hutch top for over coffee station.

Prep table would be 24 in deep (allows for 41 in clearance to cabs on west and east) and 60-80 in length

Adding that the butlers pantry is 56 in deep, when removed would have 154 in on stove and sink wall

Could you draw up your existing floor plan (with all dimensions/windows/doorways listed) and also your proposed floor plan? The photos that you included just have rough dimensions of the room.

If I'm envisioning this right, you are pushing it for space for the prep table. Is there a countertop on the table? If so, you'll need to add another 3" to the width of the table (1.5" of overhang on each side). You need 42" of walkway for a single user in the kitchen or 48" for two cooks in the kitchen. Perhaps narrow the prep table? You definitely don't have room for seating on the sides of the table, but there might be space on the ends for a single seat on each side (since it will be narrow). I don't think it will be a functional workspace if the prep table is between the stove and the sink. Could you remove one bank of cabinets (or turn into narrower pantry space) and increase the size of the island and add the sink/dishwasher to the island?

Including a scale drawing, on simple graph paper, with the current floorplan and the proposed plan would help significantly.

You need to measure aisle widths from counter top to counter top or whatever sticks out the furthest like appliances not cabinet to cabinet. So if your aisle is 41 inches measuring from cabinet to cabinet then subtract 3 inches to allow for 1.5 inch counter overhang or possibly more if you have an appliance that sticks out further than the counter over hang.

I agree with Jen L. The barrier prep table would be very annoying. Not to mention that 41” isles are going to feel pretty tight. Especially with seating.

Are you open to having the sink on an island? If so, maybe something like this?

Or if you prefer the galley style, maybe something like this?

Eta: Oops, I just remembered the window is too low for cabinets. I love that you are reusing the cute butler pantry cabinets!
