Where is the location and what has the weather been like? Looks like either transplant shock or cold damage.

We purchased it at a nursery in Riverside, CA and it was transplanted to La Canada, CA, less than an hour away. It's been pretty mild weather for a California winter, so I would be a bit surprised if it were too cold, and we may have also seen the cold effect on the other fruit trees we had delivered at the same time. Shock is a possibility, but the damage particularly on the edges of the leaves look strange to me, almost burnt?

Yeah, no cold damage :-) But very likely some transplant shock. April is kinda late for planting fruit trees. That is typically done during dormancy.

Transplant shock can manifest in different forms and dried, crispy leaf edges can be one symptom. A mild cosmetic issue as long as the tree is carefully watered. And perhaps given a bit of sun protection.

So it was transplanted in full leaf? Was it absolutely soaked for the first few days? Was it under shade at the nursery?
