mirrors and lighting layout - need help

last year
last modified: last year

How would you arrange your lighting and mirrors with this master bathroom?
I am trying to understand where a mirror or mirrors would be positioned, where lighting would go and what types of lights. (overhead? sconces? size etc.) large mirror or smaller ones? I want something other than the plain sheet of mirror. How might you do the layout of lighting and mirrors with this setup? It seems too tight for most configurations that I have seen others do.

{ Thanks in advance for those that have already responded! }

Cabinets are stone gray (aristokraft). Faucets are Moen brushed gold Cia (almost bronze) [faucet photo below with floor/bathroom surround tile]

This is precisely how we will be given by the builder but we have requested that they remove the large plain mirror to complete our own customization:

You could install 3 narrow mirrors and 4 narrow sconces. You have to determine if you want a mirror for the makeup area or not.

I think it's a huge mistake to not have recessed medicine cabinets. Bathrooms need tons of shallow space for holding Rx, toothpaste, cold medicines not to mention all the storage needed for makeup and electrical appliances.

If you want lights above this is what Moen offers that matches the faucet.

If you install three 24" mirrors, then the four sconces must be narrow (example) because you will have only 6" of wall space between the mirrors, and between the mirrors and cabinets:

    ( 96 - (24 * 3) ) / 4 = 6

If you install two 30" mirrors, then you must use vanity lights because there will only be 3" between the mirrors and the cabinets:

    ( 36 - 30 ) / 2 = 3

If you install two 24" mirrors you must use four sconces because the distance between the mirrors, and between the mirrors and cabinets will be substantially different:

    Distance between mirrors: ( ( 36 - 24 ) / 2 ) * 2 + 24 = 36

Distance between mirrors and cabinets = 6

The easiest solution is to use one mirror and one to three vanity lights.

Thank you both for the guidance. Unfortunately this cabinet/counter/overhead lighting design wasn't our choice but we figured mirrors and lighting would be a manageable customisation after our box build. Leaning towards 2 mirrors over the sinks and a sconce in the middle + Keeping the overhead vanity lights.

You would have a lot more flexibility if you removed the upper cabinets. This would give you more counter space as well as more space for a mirror over each sink and sconces on either side of the mirrors. What are you planning on storing in those upper cabinets? Can you build a linen closet elsewhere in the room? As Bev stated, recessed medicine cabinets can hold a boatload of small items that you need as you're grooming.

"Leaning towards 2 mirrors over the sinks and a sconce in the middle."

    Well, that will certainly be...unique.

We have a similar set up & did one large framed mirror - I wanted more reflection area so I didnt have to be glued to one spot for drying my hair etc - we also have a sky light and large window and I like how the natural light bounces around with the mirror

Use crown to connect the two towers, add plate mirror and four sconces. That’s not what the op wants and it sounds like it’s already wired for lights directly over each sink?

If you're not changing anything except for adding mirrors and lighting you could do it in one of two ways:

    1. Mirror over each sink with a vanity light over each mirror.

    2. Mirror spanning the entire wall. A single sconce to the left and right of the mirrors, and a matching double sconce in the center. The mirror would have to be carefully cut to accommodate the lights.

Keep in mind that the sconces will need to be fairly narrow to fit in the spaces next to the upper cabinets. I would probably opt for #1. Here's how we did it, with a much narrower vanity, recessed medicine cabinets (with mirrors inside and outside), and double vanity lights:

That would look awkward as she would have only 6" at either end of the mirror -- adjacent to the cabinets -- to place the left- and right-hand sconces and the third sconce would float in the center with no relationship to the locations of the sinks.

That's really four sconces because the distance between the mirrors, and between the mirrors and cabinets are significantly different.

Yeah sure it looked like a double on a quick glance.
