As much as it breaks my heart to see a bookcase advertised as a place to keep towels, you could consider something like this, at http://www.bookcasesgalore.com/bookcases/decorative/598+606+4294947397.cfm. I've put a few books in it to keep us all honest. I think I'd like to see a low bookcase in a contrasting dark wood in this position. Keep the mirror pretty well where it is, place a tall vase with flowers to the right. Perhaps a low decorate platter below the mirror on the bookshelf.

I can't guess at more than that without seeing the rest of the space, which from this evidence would probably be really worth seeing. Bless you for wanting a bookcase and not a place to keep your ****dle.

PS can't see the treads at all, and very little of the railing.

Thanks for the comments. This is a pic of another angle that shows the staircase. I'd like the bookcase to go to the ceiling so 9'x4.5 wide. Im just at a lose as to how to tie the treads & railing into it or not.

I would put a bookcase on the wall that you have the mirror/chest on. Flat against the wall and maybe custom made to slant at the top to follow your staircase line. I would not worry about working it into the treads or around the corner. I think that would look a little strange and hard to organize.

Find another spot for the bookcase. This whole area seems awkward and you want your front entry to be attractive, no? Even if you have to buy an inexpensive bookcase and put it in a closet it would be a better option.

Bookcases can be messy and that's not a good look to welcome guests.
