Hi Ingrid. Our growing conditions are so different, but I do grow Hermosa and did grow her climbing sport Setina until she succumbed to RRV. Setina came first and I liked her so much I thought to grow Hermosa at her feet. I do really like this rose despite the winter die-back and relative lack of scent.

I imagine in even a slightly warmer zone she'd be a nice medium bush without getting overwhelming. Her canes are long and lithe which gives her an elegant look well suited to her flowers both in colour and form. Her name fits her perfectly.

Some BS here... Setina seemed Better in that regard, but Hermosa is not hopeless and remains despite that. She's a blender in the garden and blooms a LOT in both profusion and frequency. I think some folks may grow her, but don't mention her as she's no hot house flower, but rather a workhouse displaying both grace and gritone tends to forget about her. I hope some lurkers who grow her contribute as I've no one to discuss her with. She seems fine with low care, but I'm sure would excel with even a bit of coddling. ...too bad she always dies back.... She can take the sun, as well.

There are quite a few hermosa at the local rose garden in temecula . ill consider this a homeschool field trip and we will report back with pbotos . ive been meaning to go anyway ! i do recall seeing mildew on it one year early in fhe winter . so we will look this year too . Will reporrt back later today ! 😀

This is so strange, I mean really strange. I posted my question about Hermosa in the Antique Roses forum as I thought not too many in the regular Roses forum would be familiar with a China rose. The next day and the following days until today it was gone, and now I'm seeing it in the regular Roses forum. This is beyond weird!!!

A belated thank you as I can finally see my thread and your answers. Sheila, your beautiful Hermosa seems to be on steroids, but that's normal for your garden. Lilyfinch, how sweet of you to check out Hermosa at the local rose garden. I imagine it would do well in your and my southern California weather, but then again Old Blush, another China, did mildew for me. As I mentioned on another thread, growing roses may not be in the cards for me after all as the critters have had fun over the last 24 hours., shredding leaves and chewing on branches. Oh well!

Jen, please don't go to any extra trouble, only go whenever it's convenient for you. I haven't tried the hot pepper spray, but frankly I'm beginning to think that none of them really work well because you'd have to constantly spray any new growth. I don't have the energy for a regimen like that and if something is too difficult then I have to think it just isn't meant to be.

Oh Ingrid it is / was no extra trouble ! I had been meaning to go anyway . The rose haven garden in Temecula is in full bloom and so lovely . I stopped yesterday. They have many hermosa plants , all looking well . I’m not sure if it’s a trait of the blooms to look perhaps parched ( or thin petals ?) but that was all I noted as a minus. They otherwise looked very nice !! No mildew at all . They use irrigation but perhaps need more .. it’s in a very open hot part of town . I will say there were Hermosa under trees blooming just as well !

My Hermosa today…

For me, it blackspots abd defoliates after every bloom cycle and I have decided yo remove it when it is done blooming. Even the blackspot doesn’t seem to really impact the overall health abd if I had a bigger garden, I would probably find somewhere to tuck this easy going rose.

Jen, the Hermosa at the rose park is awesome! Can you imagine, though, trying to dead head a plant like that? You'd be standing there all day. I'm so glad you added the pic of Old Blush; I never knew it could do that; so many of the old roses will just keep on growing as long as they have what they need. Thank you so much for your efforts, not as easy when you have little ones going along.

I just use shears instead of clippers!
