Need help identifying this shrub!

Just bought this home, and among the many required jobs is an update of the front yard. The shrub in the pictures below has completely overtaken the front of the house, and before I cut it down I want to know if I can just trim it back.
Does anyone know what this shrub is? It gets mostly sun. In North Carolina.
