Every picture I see of this rose is amazing - I am yet to see a more scrumptious crimson color. Very beautiful!

I think one has to seek out these treasures, versus landscapers putting them in. The classics are not widely available.

Hybrid Perpetuals in general don't get a lot of love. They often lack the disease resistance needed in the east, and don't repeat well enough for the west. They also often need to be budded. Which is becoming rarer and rarer.

I have two SdDJ bands arriving from High Country Roses tomorrow, and I am so excited! I've been trying to acquire him for the past three years, but the few suppliers that carry him always seemed to be sold out.

Artist it probably means it needs to be grafted to have the necessary vigor. Also like mad_gallica mentioned this rose may be a huge blackspotter in your garden.

Mine is own root. It is not extremely large after voles take out canes. It is managing. Crepuscule petered out next to it. Again, voles or irrigation failure.

You don't seem to have it climbing on a structure. Do you grow it as a bush?

I just let the roses do what they want.

The Dr. would be great on a structure.

I have the good Doctor, as well as two other roses sometimes confused with it in commerce, 'Souvenir d'Alphonse Lavallée' and 'Erinnerung an Brod'. (Why these three should be confused, beyond being in the same color range, puzzles me. Dr Jamain and Alphonse Lavallée have a similar habit, but the former is thornless. And 'Erinnerung an Brod' is far more vigorous, not to mention hardier and once-flowering.)

Many sources suggest planting 'Souvenir du Dr Jamain' in shade, or at least morning sun, and I think this is probably good advice, to prevent blooms from frying in hot sun. I have mine on an obelisk, though it's set back a little too much by our Zone 5 winters to make an ideal climber here. Its canes are more short-lived than most, but it reliably produces more each year. Like many Hybrid Perpetuals, its repeat is... not really perpetual. But it's a delightful rose, nonetheless.

I have one arriving from HCR next week and can't be more excited. I may try budding one to see if it will grow a bit better here as I'd like to train it to climb

Own root Dr will climb without budding, E. I just failed to give it support. The Dr was not at fault.
