While technically self-fertile, you will get heavier cropping if additional plants are nearby. But birds and other wildlife eat them all anyway :-))

Yeah it’s weird because I get such few berries and then the few that I do get start forming and eventually shrivel up. I think I will add a second one. My local nursery had a baileyi cultivar which I would assume has the same bloom time. It’s more compact which would actually work out for where I want to plant it. I was looking for straight species but they only had that.

I have quite a few of these along my border stream, and notice that berry production varies quite a bit year to year, even if flower production seems fairly constant. As GG says, even if there's a good crop, they don't last long once ripe.

My black cherry produces oodles of tiny berries, but then aborts 90% of them once they begin getting larger (ground gets littered w/them).

Bengz your cherry situation sounds similar to dogwood situation ! Hopefully this year is better than others. I’d love to see more berries for the birds.

James, I planted a single pagoda dogwood (berries very similar to red-stem), and now I have volunteers everywhere where there's an overhanging branch. But they are welcome here -- here's a volunteer.
