What to do with these kitchen cabinets?

last year

Hi everyone,

Wondering if anyone can give me some ideas of what to do with those kitchen cabinets?

1. There's a gap between the upper cabinets and the ceiling. But doesn't look I can move the upper cabinets up to fill the gap because there might be pipes behind the wall above the cabinets...

2. Will it look weird if I keep the left side of the cabinets but stain it to a darker walnut color but repaint the main cabinets to greige or light grey color?

3. what color of countertop would go well with the stained cabinets and the greige cabinets (if we decided to paint them greige or light grey)

4. What color should the floor be? I am thinking checkboard with light grey and beige...

5. Will I be able to fit a stand alone island (those ones that look like a table instead of the typical island.

6. Can I install a range hood above the stove instead of the microwave. I would like to install one that can exhaust outside, but the stove looks like it's kinda far from the exterior wall.

7. What to do with the stand alone fridge, should I add a little cabinets on top and extend the cabinets on the side so it looks like it's part of the kitchen?

8. Should I move the fridge closer to the window so I can make some space for the stand alone island?

9. Will changing the main cabinets to shaker style a better idea? But then will need to change the left side as well to make it consistent.

Sorry for all the questions. Attached are some pictures of the current kitchen and my inspiration.

    Don’t apologize for asking questions…😊

I would not paint these cabinets.
To be completely honest, this kitchen is a bit of a mess 🫣
I would leave it as is until we can rework and replace.

Have you opened the small doors over the microwave to see if there's an exhaust duct already there?

With all you want to do it seems like you would be better off reworking that whole space. You have mismatched cabinets and a fridge sitting out all by its lonesome.

#1 you can't just move cabinets up - you would need taller cabinets to reach the ceiling

    #2 yes weird

    #3 N/A

#4 what floors are in the adjoining rooms - match kitchen to them

The layout is poor so to spend thousands painting/staining cabinets, changing floor etc doesn't really make sense. I would start saving for a complete rework of the layout

    Is this a DIY project?

Love the inspo photo(s), where do you imagine these cabinets?

The current configuration is not good. The stove should come out of the corner. Are you left or right handed? Dishwasher could go to the right of the sink to give you more room for the range. Do you already have an exterior exhaust with the microwave? The frig should be moved to the open counter area by the door (next to the pantry cabinet.

If you are doing an island, make it substantial, not some little moveable cart.

Yes, paint them all to suit. position the odd fronts to make it look intentional.

Are you able to remove all the cabinets and rehang them? If the boxes are good and sturdy, I would do that. If you want the look of cabinets to the ceiling, you can build a facade to mimic the look without actually having a tall cabinet. You could also remove all the existing cabinets and re hang them on the other side of the room to build out the whole kitchen, with a coffee station, Bar, baking cabinet, etc. and get a new configuration on the existing side.

It is all do able, what's the budget?

First the cabinets you have are very dated so what exactly do you want from us ?Is this a new to you space ? I need to know more about you, your style and if the budget can handle a proper redo of the space . I certainly would not spend one penny painting those . I think the whole space is a mess and the layou awful The light above thetable with the gray chairs is all wrong and to begin in the kitchen you need a lot more lighting . Your inspo pics are nice but do not work with the style of those gray chairs . I went to your idea books to get a hint as to style but those are all over the map so no help.
