The uppers handle should be a comfortable size for your hand, regardless of cabinet door height. People usually will do all the same size for the uppers, the varying widths would be used for horizontal pulls on drawers. I hope I understood your question!

More contemporary designs tend to use the really long pulls.

If your house leans transitional/traditional you might want to look at the "1/3 of drawer width rule" as your starting point and then adjust up/down for the best look for your particular taste and kitchen.

Nothing wrong with classic 96mm pulls for all.
