Random Cosmetic Review

Waiting for a delayed flight to board, and I'm bored. Some random observations:

1. I had a sample size of this from somewhere, and I really like it. Plus how can you not love an under eye concealer called Winky Lux Perfect Peeper?

2. So I came across this and am trying to recreate it (tho subtler). https://youtube.com/shorts/uUAvAV6VplA?si=i9koWq57PHqVGDXj .

My existing powder shadows were too messy. I like this product by Bobbi Brown. Long-Wear Cream Eyeshadow Stick

3. I bought a curling iron and sent it back. When did they get rid of the clip and send you a glove? WTH. Plus duh, my Revlon Hot Air Brush can give me the curl I want. Speaking of curling, my DDs did my makeup when we went to the recent wedding and insist I get an eyelash curler. I'd forgotten about this torture device, but obeyed. Surratt Relevee Lash Curler

4. Last but not least. I pretty much collect cosmetic cases for the purse. I have not wanted to use this one because it is so pretty. But it is so pretty! and the leather tab feels so soft. Wish I could find another but Bendel went under a while ago.

And ... still not boarding.

I am still deciding how I feel about BH. It's a departure from my MAC Pink Maribou, which I have worn for 17 years. I have it made for me.

Black Honey on me. Very subtle.

It is. To me it looks like Burts Bees. It looks nice on you.

There are a few dupes. Burts Bees is one in the shade Red Dahlia.

Yes. I didn't just mean the color, I meant that the Clinique's Black Honey is really more like a colored gloss than a lipstick.

    last modified: 27 days ago

It used to be a gloss in a little pot. i didn’t realize they had a black honey lipstick. I have not worn/bought clinique in years.

Well, well. I rooted around in my not-currently-using box of makeup and found a tube of Black Honey. I tried it and understand why it ended up in that box: there's too much brown in it for me. I need something a little cooler, having turned into a Winter with silver hair. Over the years I'd switched to Clinique Chubby Stick Voluptuous Violet (since discontinued, thanks Clinique, if I love it, it's the kiss of death). Same type of sheer balm formula. Did a side-by-side and Black Honey did not win. I need to look for a dupe when this runs out. It will cost virtually nothing to start with Elf.

I think it is too dark for me too, but I am not sure. I might like it better in autumn.

I was influenced by a previous thread here to try the Elf Black honey dupe. I've worn it less than a dozen times but that's less about the color and more 'the thing' I have with lick-stick which is what my DGD calls it. I can wear all kinds of make up but lipstick makes me feel like I'm playing dress up - it wears me, I don't wear it.

Fun thread. Good thing you quit on your plane, mtn.

Does the Almost Lipstick have staying power? Maybe I should get tattooed ;/ Ha

Not really. That is the thing about glossy "lickstick"

I remember getting Black Honey in a GWP and not liking the color on me, but that was years ago and my coloring has shifted since then. I am a Burt's Bees regular, mostly Pomegranate. When I want just a bit more color, I have a color changing lip stain I apply first. Mine is kind of coral color and changes to a berry pink. DIL was the one who told me about it and I've worn it since even though saying so makes me feel like I got stuck in my teens. My only issue with Burt's Bees was that I wanted a bit more color when doing full makeup, but I can't stand anything heavy or sticky on my lips. I also can't stand them being dry.

I tried LG and have kept looking. The baked foundation leaves my skin a bit dry, my eyes itchy and the color is only good when I can focus the brush on the lighter swirls. Too much of the color and it does start looking orange. I haven't tried DRMTLGY yet - based on kswl's comments I think I will try the matte version. Meanwhile, I got a tube of Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Aging Skin Perfector. A light layer blends in easily and doesn't sit on top of the skin feeling heavy or sticky - very important. The coverage is light and the look and feel are very natural. First impression is good.

Outsideplaying, I looked at my BB cream shadow sticks and one is Taupe (for the eyelid crease) and the other is Moonstone (inner corner). They have already lasted almost two years!

I second the laura mercier eyeshadow sticks but I havent worn them in a long time either. It may be because i am lazy .. or it could be the colors I have. I suspect lazy.

I took a selfie the other day after I had my hair done -- and my face looked terrible! I had such dark circles under my eyes and I looked old and tired. I immediately ordered another YSL eclat "awakening" concealer pen (have used before and like) and also a Nars concealer I saw an influencer use. Hoping one of them does the trick but if not, I will try the winky lux.

For lips I stick with the light pinks, brown pinks. I really like the Westman Atelier Squeaky Clean lip balm in chou chou or nana -- and have received compliments on both. I pretty much wear burts bees lip shimmer for every day.

I dont wear mascara very often as my eyes are super sensitive and very watery -- but as I age, I am seeing that I need definition. Not sure what I will do to get some color at my waterline. I don't have ANY precision as I cannot actually see my eyeline and I don't want to be one of those women with a dark like 2 mm from the actual eyeline! I may try the eyeshadow sticks one day when I feel like playing. Chanel used to have one in platinum that worked great but it is discontinued and I was much younger (and had better eyesight and depth perception) when I wore it.

Hope you actually got to your destination, Mtn -- we had many bad thunderstorms throughout the day on Friday!

Funky, which Nars concealer did you order? Maybe there's only one kind. I have been using Nars concealer in Crème Brûlée for several years. So many shades from which to choose. I should have added in my comments about the Laura Geller foundation that I need to start with concealer around my eyes and dab on spots here and there, because the LG foundation doesn't give *that* kind of coverage, although it softens the look all around. Another reason I like the baked powder is that it doesn't disturb the concealer underneath the way applying liquid foundation on top does.

I have switched from concealer to color corrector. I use a dab of peach to correct the purple shadows under my eyes. I need to buy a different green for the redness. I have a green with a blue undertone. After watching a bunch of tutorials, I think I need a green with a yellow undertone.

My niece has included DD and me to have our hair and make-up done the day of the wedding. It’ll be interesting to see what a make-up person does to my face.

    last modified: 25 days ago

Funky, my eyes are super sensitive as well. I've had luck applying brown eye shadow with a small brush under my lower lash line. It gives my eye some definition and the application is not as unforgiving as conventional eye liner.

Funky, they reschedule my flight from 1:10pm Friday to ... 9am ...Saturday. I don't know how they can call that a delay. I am going this w/e instead.

I use Urban Decay eyeliner pencil and it is the oddest thing, but when I line my top lid, it automatically goes on my bottom waterline too. Must be the texture. Then I smudge it.

Bunny, I got the radiant creamy concealer in a brush format-- there is also a creamy pot. I got the brush because I could get it in a smaller size ... I am not sure about the color as I have a crazy amount of pigment in my skin and matches can be tricky. Which do you use? I do see the creme brulee color -- I ordered custard which is a little more beige (at least per the photo).

Dee, yes! That is the approach I am thinking to try-- I dont need black or even a dark brown, which to your point, is unforgiving and will show any missteps in application. I am thinking a medium soft brown. I dont like to use a brush near my eyes because of my depth perception issues-- I am just so protective of my eyes and eyeliner brushes are stiff. I know a pencil sounds worse lol but the soft shadow feels "safer".

I didnt know how much a year or two would change my face! I was prepared for wrinkles but not the disappearing eyes surrounded by dark circles lol.

Thanks for the tips on the BB eyeshadow sticks. I tried the Thrive ones after getting a lot of Instagram ads, and I don't love them. I have deep set eyes and dark lids so I wear a light eye shadow often to help me look awake. I like the idea of a stick. Right now I am having good luck with a MAC cream pot. It wears pretty well. I have never tried an eyelash curler! I'm another Burt's Bees fan. That is my go to. I'm not very good at putting on lipstick, so I find those work better - more room for error :)

legomom, I also have darkish lids and prefer light shadows -- yes! they make me look more awake and brighter. I tend to creamy yellows and lighter pinks with a bit of brown. I also like slightly metallic liners for the same reason. I have also had good luck with the pots-- chanel, charlotte tilsbury eyes to mesmerize (love the name!) and mac. Mac doesnt last as long for me (in the pot-- not on my eyes) so I lean to the other two brands more. Of course, the Mac is cheaper so there's that.

I will be honest with you all -- I have been lazy and have not worn much make up these last bunch of months. I guess that is why i looked so terrible in the photos i took lol. I want to look good (or at least better) but I also dont want to spend much time on it. Playing with makeup just isnt fun for me anymore.

Funky, that's the one. I'm not sure how I came to select Nars. Of course it starts with a Clinique product being discontinued or reformulated not in a good way. I'm grateful for my Ulta store with good natural lighting. Crème Brûlée looks terrible in the sample square online, pinky peachy, which it is not. It may not be my 100% color, but it's close. Without going over the redness around my eyes, I'd look awful.

Speaking of waterlines. I'm a firm believer in stroking the underneath waterline of my upper lids with soft pencil liner. It eliminates that little band of skin showing through, makes your lashes look longer.

Funky - I've never tried the Charlotte Tillbury brand before but it looks like my local Ulta carries it so I'll check those eyeshadows out.

I've always thought I look better without a lot of makeup - maybe it's my face shape, deep set eyes, etc, or I just never really learned a method that was helpful enough to really matter!

I have been doing the red light mask and I have to say I'm kind of a fan - I don't know about true lasting effects, but it has some immediate effects that look good to me.

@legomom23, "red light mask"? I had to google it. I must be living under a rock because this is the first time I've heard of it. My skin is my nemesis, aging yet still acne-prone. Tell me more!

    last modified: 24 days ago

For those of you who mentioned using eyeshadow as eyeliner, I do that as well for my lower lid because I like eyeliner in colors other than black or brown. Instead of using a brush, try using the tip of your finger to apply it. It will give you a smoky look. For more control, a more intense color, and less fallout you can mix the eyeshadow with Duraline. Duraline also makes it waterproof and very long lasting. It is a product with multiple uses. Eyes, lips, foundation.

For my upper lid I use a creamy eyeliner that is mixed with Duraline and applied with a brush. I really like the brand Inglot.

I love wearing makeup and I always want my eyes to take center stage.

@Bunny - I've been using the mask consistently for about 9 months, although I had it before then. I don't think there are any quick results from it, but I am hoping as part of my skin care routine, it might slow down future aging. I have really dry skin and more wrinkles than I think I should at 54.

That said, DS had really good results with a red light panel for his acne. I do better lying around in a mask, so I went that direction.

Never heard of duraline but I like the idea of it making my products waterproof!

Legomom -- CT has changed their names-- the cream shadows used to be named for iconic actresses like Bette Davis. I think the one i wear most is Champagne but it is admittedly pretty light as you can see in the swatches.

I see nordstrom doesnt carry the chanel anymore-- the mousse-like formula did dry up quickly/easily so I am not surprised but i loved their colors. I do not like Chanel's liquid lacquer eye color. It goes on nicely but it made my eyelids tingle.

This is one of those items I could not go without. It makes a huge difference in my makeup application and wear. A little goes a long way. This tiny bottle will last almost a year.

Just got back from Blue Mercury where I gat handed off to the very nice Sisley rep. Got a new shadow and eyeliner for a mere $148. Gulp. I expected the cost to be high. I was going to get a concealer but it was $128. Guess Ill try the concealor that Mtn recommends . I like the shadow color. Its a creamy stick and she gave me tips for where to apply it. Anyway, she did all my makeup and I look very glamorous to go to the grocery store.

After walking around our outdoor shopping mall and seeing what people are wearing, I can tell I need to up my game.

@ilikefriday - having seen your beautiful eye makeup up close, I am totally influenced to buy that Duraline.

@dedtired - I was shopping for a specific Chantecaille lipstick in Saks and they didn't carry it and so the SA recommended a Sisley lipstick which I liked and assumed it would be roughly the same price as the Chantecaille around $45. Imagine my surprise when the SA handed me my receipt for $75 + tax. For lipstick. And ps - nothing wrong with your game!

Thanks for the compliment! I say go for it. Besides the makeup itself, I'd say Duraline is the number one most important item in my makeup bag.

I was influenced a few weeks ago by some of you here and purchased Chanel foundation. While I love the way it makes my skin look, it has no staying power at all. After a couple of attempts of wearing it on its own, I decided to add a drop or two of Duraline. That gave me a few extra hours of wear. It still doesn't compare to my Maybelline 24-hour Skin Tint in terms of longevity, but the finish of the Chanel foundation is amazing and the color match is spot on. I will save it for special occasions when I want to feel smashing 😁.

Friday, whatever you do with your eyes is pure magic!— I’ve never heard of Duraline but it would probably not be as effective in less expert hands. I do keep a bottle of makeup thinner in my drawer to de-clog mascara. I’ll have to look at the label to see if it has fixative properties also.

Ruby, $75 for a lipstick?? I never heard of such a thing! For that price it would need it to enchant my lips so that everything I said was perfectly parsed 😎

Well, I was wrong - it was only $67 + tax. And, you may be shocked to learn this lipstick did none of those magical things you suggested. It's pretty but certainly not worth the $$$.

Yes but that is so pretty! Prettier than Chanel's $235 "refillable" lipstick. I want one.

I have DRMTLGY’s powder in a similar container with brush that is SPF 30. I keep it in my bag to touch up the sunscreen component without disturbing my makeup. It is very convenient. (I wear the same brand’s tinted moisturizer with 46 SPF. )

My DD gave me a tube of Pink Honey. It is more subtle and, I think, suits me better. I need almost bare or it looks like, "here comes daisy and her lips!".

It's so funny, I had a pot of Black Honey and a pot of Pink Honey in college. After trying the BH a few days, I am still undecided on it. Unless you apply it very heavily, it is pretty neutral. To me it is kind of part of the no-makeup-makeup-look. I notice my DDs never wear bright lipstick, they would probably give it a thumbs up.

I am so used to myself in a pinkish lipstick, that I thought I might try PH. However, the product is also much glossier than I am used to and it wears off fa,r far more quickly than lipstick.

    So IDK.

I might ask my DDs to weigh in or DH. I think when you are used to seeing yourself a certain way, you aren't so sure about whether change is for change's sake or an improvement. I guess if you were sending me to a desert island tomorrow, I'd still take my Pink Maribou with me .(water filtration systems and fishing poles be damned).

    Colorscience products are great!

I never have naked lips! that being said is why I like clinique BH to just swipe on like you would a burts bees etc. My lipstick when I use a nude lip pencil too is ”Cool Teddy” by MAC .

But see, with BH, you will have naked lips because, unlike best quality lipsticks, it does not stain your lips.

The Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honeydoes not have a strong staying power. It is more of a tinted lip balm with a sheer, glossy finish. Many users find it fades quickly and requires reapplication. The formula glides on smoothly and feels like a moisturizing layer, but it doesn't offer long-lasting color

Dee, I recently saw someone show how much of that powdered sunscreen you must use to get the coverage it touts - it is a LOT and looks really heavy. This person recommends instead of wearing it as primary sunscreen to use it in conjunction with regular liquid sunscreen, but only after the liquid sunscreen has dried down, otherwise you might disturb that first layer. I would probably use it like KSWL does...as a touch up.

Have any of you looked at the other Winky Lux products? Macy's has a white tea tinted moisturizer that sounds nice, but less aimed at mature skin than the DRMTLGY brand. There is a lip stain that goes on clear and changes to a pink -- and then there are the glittery options and other such. I feel like the targeted demographic is younger than my DIL, but I'm looking at the Perfect Peeper. Everything I have used for years or tried recently is irritating my eyes now. At least I think that is the culprit.
