Using Compost With or Without Soil

last month

I have a soggy (base) Odorata bromeliad in a garden that's a little wobbly. I have a feeling the lawn guys stepped on it. I'm trying to save it.
I bought a little 6-1/4" fence that wraps around the base of the plant, which fits perfectly, but notice the base is very wet.
My questions are..
1. Will I lose it? How can I save it?
2. I read that it doesn't need much water. I read that compost was a good substitute for absorbing water. So, is it safe to add a bag of compost, or should I mix it with soil?
Thanks,
Scott
