Help needed on paint/wallpaper combinations for large primary

last month
last modified: last month

Big thank you to everyone for your help!! Here's the dimensions of the room drawn to the best of my ability. I'll respond to the rest of the comments/questions directly!

We have an oversized primary bedroom that has a bed, couch and my office space. There are also doors to two small walk in closets, a bathroom and a mirrored bypass closet opposite the bed, which I plan to replace with oak doors instead of mirrors. There is a decent amount of natural light via windows and a skylight.

For the last 3ish years the walls have been a blue color, which feels very overwhelming.
I’d like to do some combination of a sage or blue/grey paint, cream paint and wallpaper, since having all four walls the same color feels very overwhelming (it’s been blue for about three years now).

My question is - if I wallpaper one wall, can I paint two others and leave one white? If so, should I bookend the white and wallpaper and have the walls opposite each other with paint? Would it be better to just do the accent wall and the rest one color or all white?

I spend a lot of time in here so really want it to feel warm and sophisticated.

    It’s personal but for me that high contrast wall color against the white ceiling seems to emphasis the lack of height in there - if it were me me, Id empty the whole room and get the carpet professionally cleaned and paint the walls a nice cream to start

    a few other ideas would be a larger desk and some larger lamps

    you could also hang some curtain panels at the ceiling to emphasize the windows more - hang them wider them the window so you don’t block any light

    I would start by doing a nice walkin closet and use up spme of thst useless space . Do you use the sofa or does it just fill a space . The other choice would be to enclose the area where the office is since that is not a good thing to have in the bedroom . A nice looking space but just big for no reason Pleae post a to scale floor plan of the bedroom , bathroom and closets all shown . Color is IMO chosen to go with bedding which could be a bit more interesting. Wallpaper is choden to go with the rest of the stuff including the bedding .Your bedding is where I would start with the actual decor , no little stugg hanging on the wall a much nicer fan if you must have one. The big issue really is the space is just huge with no real plan and thta carpet has to go the rug on top only makes it look worse.

    agree with @la_la Girl ^ too much contrast. Show all four walls and lower the shades Is that a mirrored closet?

    With your carpet, bedding and sofa, I would start with a sample of SW Alabaster

    a soft creamy white, ceilings and wall the same color. Generally, I would paint all the trim(s) the same color as the wall, but in your case, I would leave all the stained wood trim (for ease)

    Move the furniture away from the windows. without seeing all four walls, I would move the sofa to the computer desk area. Get bedside tables that are same height as top of mattress.

    Well, yours is a good problem to have, LOL. Am going to discourage your from doing a wallpaper/paint combination. Am also going to discourage you from using blue/gray and from using a combination of that color with white. Will encourage you to paint all your walls the same color. The ceiling in your photo does seem low but that may be because your walls are painted the blusih color already.

    1. Post all dimensions of the room for help.
    2. Pick bedding. Colors that you love.
    3. Pick paint color for the walls.

    I agree with much of what was written above. No wallpaper. All walls painted the same color. A lighter color. No area rug. Clean or replace flooring.

    For paint color, choose one that gets along with wood and paint the walls and ceiling the same color, same finish, eggshell would be my suggestion. I chose this for a client's whole house color to work with dark wood trim. It turned out better than I expected. Regardless of direction of natural light this color was steady Eddie.

    Try removing and replacing the sofa pillows and move it to the foot of the bed.

    Desk goes where the sofa was. Find another room for the rug. It doesn't fit properly in the room. New bedding and wallpaper in the bathroom would be a nice combo. Spoonflower comes to mind.

    Agree to post a floor plan with all dimensions and window/door locations labeled. Then a plan for the furniture & office space can be made before choosing paint colors etc. Start looking for bedding while doing these other tasks. The skylight seems to be in a random location

    For a sophisticated look, you could do a color drench, with walls and trim the same color. Or wallpaper all walls. I'd avoid an accent wall or different colors on different walls. A rug in a color to contrast the carpet color would look nice; you could choose a rug and then pick a wall color from the rug.

    Paint the ceiling and walls the same color, but cut the ceiling color by 50%. You might enjoy SW sea salt. It can lean blue or green depending on the space.

    The room doesn't look to me like it has a ton of natural light. It seems one corner of it has windows and a skylight, but does that really throw enough light into the whole room? And, do you want the well lit area to be where you sleep?

    It is hard to suggest furniture placement without seeing the layout of your whole room. But, I suspect you can do better than this.

    How often do you use that sofa and for what?

    @Lorraine Leroux I agree ... I have played with different layouts but the placement of windows and closets is tricky. Here are the dimensions of the furniture:

    * King Bed - 76" W x 80" L

    * Dresser (2) - 56" W x 18" D

    * Nightstands (used as dressers) - 36W x 18D

    * Couch is actually a daybed which I've broken into two pieces (the couch and the bench in front of the bed) - 70"W x 40" D

    @la_la Girl - thanks for the suggestion on curtains! I've been thinking about that too!

    @Lyn Nielson - yes it is a mirrored closet! I plan to replace the doors very soon :)

    @elcieg - I like the idea to move the sofa in front of the bed if the cushions are off! I will try that.

    I've tried various layouts of the furniture over the years and have moved pretty much everything but the bed. Please excuse my mess in these pictures, but this should give you all a better visual of the space as well!

    I liked my previous layout better with the dresser as it is in the first picture below and the couch in the corner by the mirrored closet (we don't go in and out of that closet frequently so i didn't mind blocking it), but I hated my desk in the cramped corner by the door to the hallway.

    Creating a separate office space in the room is a nice idea, even if it just visually breaks up the room. I'm on the fence about a permanent wall because like someone mentioned, having an office in the bedroom is not ideal and hopefully it's not permanent.

    I would begin by selecting the item that has the most limited choices.......that would be the bed linens.

    As a comment I would remind you that blue walls enhanced and makes more vivid the orange tone in your wood trim. I would stay away from any blues or greens.

    This color combination would look good with all that oak trim.

    I might consider a charcoal gray for your walls. I don't think I'd keep the wood blinds.
    The arched window looks chessy. I'd select some art to be placed over it to cover it.
