I recently purchased a set of these old chairs, most of which require re-caning of the seat and/or back. I am assessing whether it’s worth restoring them.

1. Can anyone who has had chairs like these tell me how they hold up with general use, and perhaps weigh in on whether it’s worth it? I’ve read that caning actually is strong by nature, and that using seat cushions provides added protection for the caning and support for the seat. Can anyone offer their first-hand experience?
2. Can anyone identify the wood type and approximate age of the chairs based on the photos?
