need help - dining room

Our dining room needs an overhaul! We have been using inherited furniture, window treatments and lighting. Would love your thoughts on “what you’d do” given the following:

  1. We have two antique rosewood oriental style cabinets I’d like to incorporate into an updated design (or at least include the bar cabinet)

  2. We are expecting a second baby soon and want to place a counter-height cabinet or other solution in the corner near kitchen, however I have no clue what wood tones/styles/colors go with the antique wood.

  3. Given we are expecting, it would be great to have recommendations on storage/counter space solution and some easier options for updates, then I welcome any and all recommendations on bigger changes.

Thank you!

What a great dining set to inherit. I don’t think you will need to go all out to bring a more put together feel to the room. I would consider finding a round rug to place under the table and rethink the drapes.

Once you hang some art on the walls I feel you are going to be done. It looks wonderful otherwise. It just needs to be pulled together.

Agree with adding large art and a rug to finish the room.

What are the measurements of the room?

Can the two rosewood cabinets shown be moved to the shared kitchen walls on either side of the door opening to give you the cabinet(s) you want? You could place stone/other counters (secure them) on each cabinet to protect the wood tops and to make them more usable.

What are you planing to use the cabinet for? I would not put the two together with a top to protect them, as it might slide or present instability. The two pieces are unique, and positioning them with artwork or open shelves above will highlight this. Maybe a wineglass shelf (glasses hand upside down) over the bar would work. I do think the drapes could be re-evaluated after you add art, etc., they appear a bit drab in the photos.

Thank you for the advice! I agree the window treatments could be updated, not the “freshest” feeling and a rug would help break up all the wood. Any thought on pattern vs solid lighter color for rug and drapes?

Both antique cabinets actually have flip up tops so I won’t want to cover them. I want another cabinet/sideboard 40” or less wide and ~36”H that can be used on the wall between window and kitchen (or the adjacent kitchen wall next to that) in order to create more counter space from kitchen and add storage, likely make it into a coffee bar to make room in kitchen for our bottle washer/sterilizer, drying racks etc with newborn coming and use the cabinets to store other baby essentials.

My struggle is figuring out what type of wood cabinet to purchase that will coordinate with the existing furniture?

measurements of the walls: where the two antique cabinets are now are ~45in, the long wall next to the silverware chest is 7.5ft, the walls on either side of the window opposite the longer wall are ~42in, the wall on left side of kitchen doorway when facing kitchen from dining room is 45in and the one on right side of kitchen doorway is 36in.

You have a very nice room to work with but although you love your antique cabinets I find you'll have too many small cabinets intersperse around the room especially by adding another 40 inch long cabinet.

If you can draw and post a simple floor plan showing all dimensions, entrances, doors, windows, etc. as well as the size of your dining table, it would help to suggest a furniture layout.

For now all I can suggest is to turn your chairs clockwise around the table.

Yes start by turning the table.

I cannot see the details and the exact colors of the items you have inherited, but I'd say you have been pretty lucky so far.

Here is a way you could finish the room with chests, wall decor, buffet lights, plants & a square rug under the turned table.

This is the younger cousin of your rosewood bar circa 1977. It used to be in my dining room with the coordinating table and china cabinet. Now it is in my living room. Does yours have a drawer inside the lower part too?

When you say you want an area for making coffee in the dining room, what all do you intend to put on it? A coffee maker? Does it need to be near an outlet? Will you be running back and forth to the kitchen to dump grounds and add water?

Are you 100% sure you have maximized and organized your kitchen cabinet to fully take advantage of all the space in there?

What do you have or could you have stored in the antique pieces already in your dining room? You say both of them open up on the top. What can you store in them?

Thank you, this is all helpful. The turned chairs and square/rectangular rug looks good in the pics and the artwork really makes a difference.

Lisedv - I get what you’re saying on having too many pieces. I don’t have a room planner app, but sketched this with dimensions on graph paper. The table is big - 68in diameter. If you have recommendations for a better layout - or even with a different table - let me know what you think :)

Rho - the style is really similar minus the carvings on mine! yes, mine has a pull out drawer in the bottom cabinet. My parents got it while living in Malaysia in early ‘80s. Here’s a closer picture of the bar with top up.

Kendrah- good functionality points. We have a LatteGo espresso machine that has a water vat and is automatic, so wouldn’t be much back and forth to sink, but the sink is also only about 6 ft away. Unfortunately our kitchen storage is limited with smaller older cabinets and not much clearance space under them to the counter, so we have to reorganize some things already to make space for our bottle washer and baby feeding stuff.

may put in there. The antique cabinets don’t have much room for additional items unfortu

Light curtains and walls with a side board that is different enough not to clash, but pulls the room together, in conjunction with art and a rug.

The pic you just showed is really beautiful with the lid up. How wide is it? Consider using it with the lid up as a place for your espresso machine. You'd want to get a piece of glass cut or some other flat surface to put over the recessed "hole".

Below is a floor plan showing an Ikea extendable to 84 inches white dining table which would allow more seating as well as more walk around room making the room look larger. Also showing a white sideboard with plenty of storage. Here's the idea...

Host chairs and curtains available at Ikea, Wayfair, Amazon.

If the smaller piece can be moved someplace else, a longer narrow console might work on the left side. I do love the antiques but you are expecting a new baby and practicality needs to be first.
Does your kitchen have enough storage for everything you need for the baby?
