interior Designer opinion on zebra blinds….

last year

Iam having trouble settling on a window solution, I need privacy but also want to be able to see out when needed, I really don’t want the blinds do to ruin the look of the room. I have done curtains in the past but they do not look great closed in my opinion, they collect dust and require fussing to put back in place. We currently have a linen roller shade who g is very nice and soothing looking but my husband hates his it blocks the entire view.
I stayed in a posh hotel with linen look zebra shades and thought it looked nice. I like the idea of top down bottom up. I would love to hear from an interior designer perspective.

Yes to top down bottom up shades. No to zebra shades unless you would otherwise planning to put large horizontal stripes as a decor feature in your room.

Very nice room by the way.

A Hunter Douglas Silhouette with 4" vein, on a remote control , will not be "stripes" in the room...........Tilt! As much or as little privacy as you want.!!

Not the readily available "Zebra " Budget Blind cheap mimic. Four inch veins change everything.....

Get a house call from a reputable HD dealer.Get the remote : )

Double nice if the muntin fakes can come out of that window.

Top down bottom up? Depends what you want need to SEE and when.

    More versatility with Silhouette....

I love simple solar shades for daytime privacy, heat and UV control and the ability to keep the view then drapes for night time privacy if a must I do agree the zebras are not ideal in every space that are a design statement for sure I do not see the need for night time privacy with all those trees

@JAN MOYER - I've never seen a banded shade that gets rid of the striped look, even HD 4". But, I'm just going off what I saw when shopping. Do you have pics? I'm curious.

    Kendrah,and all

Google Hunter Douglas. Silhouettes have three Vein sizes

    2, 3, 4 inch

The wider the VEIN the farther apart the "stripes". which are nothing more than the versatility OF INTERIOR paper thin slats providing the privacy , as much or as little as needed.

You can not have what you want ALL ways, all the time 24/7.

Roller screen, top down bottom up whatever , or Silhouettes....: )

Or ? Have Beautiful Linen sheers, custom made on a good looking traverse rod and vacuum them occasionally.......or have the cleaning lady do it weekly or bi weekly?

Or tell hubby to get over it and keep what you have. Nobody is staring in there, in day light.: )

I love Silhouette shades--have had them in my bedroom forever. Very light and airy looking. Versatile--you can have them all up or all down, with or without the vanes open.

They cover the "black hole" that is a window at night, and let in light during the day. Even if you know there's no one out there, it can be unsettling to certain individuals (myself being one) to have an uncovered window at night.

They are indeed best with no mullion, grids on the windows. No different than a plantation shutter.

They are NOT ugly, inside or out. Vein width makes a gigantic difference in number of horizontal lines, and even more translucent daytime views when fully down. When partway rolled up? They mimic a roman shade.

Please!!! stop calling them....."zebra" - nothing more than a cheap mimic of the long popular original Silhouette.

If you want a treatment that is soft, sheer, and transitional in nature?

Custom linen sheers with adequate fullness, custom made, custom installed, to traverse .

    However.......

She LIKES what she has, the issue is a man, as usual.

"We currently have a linen roller shade which is very nice and soothing looking, but my husband hates it, as it blocks the entire view." (edited, sp. )

If you truly believe anyone is that interested in a man sitting at a window? With a shade half or two thirds down? I will only say this:

People are far more interested in their OWN lives.

I think this thread is confusing zebra blinds (a striped horizontal piece that slides against a striped translucent layer (I think - I’m not sure how these are made)) with silhouette shades, which have vanes (arranged like the slats on a venetian blind) that tilt inside the shade. One leaves stripes even in the ”open” position, and only lets in light over about half the overall window area. The other more or less disappears when the vanes are tilted horizontally, and lets light in over nearly 100% of the window area

The OP did mention "zebra". This what I have seen when people have showed zebra blinds on these forums ... I don't find them attractive at all. So many better options out there.

Hunter Douglas sells both zebra and Silhouette.

Pics of HD silhouettes from their website:

Pictures of HD zebras from their website, which they note can also be called zebra or banded blinds:

Hope this helps @Nora Berheim. I'm sorry that you and your husband don't agree, but I'm glad that you are going through the effort to accommodate him so this room is something you both like.

I apologize, I missed these comments from May! I always truly appreciate professionals taking the time to comment and give free advice, this is such a cool feature of the app. So thank you to all who took time to post here.
Now I see it, the banded blinds are not attractive and I won’t get those, so glad to void them now that I have more

    perspective.
