Have your floor finisher sand part of your floor and make sample on YOUR floor in YOUR home. Your floor finisher should be able to tell you red or white and help guide you to a stain finish you will like.

If, you want o hide the grain,, you will need to layer colorants. Your base color is aniline dye, then the finish color is your stain of choice.

If you "hate" how the grain in oak looks, then you want to replace it. Nothing is going to eliminate the grain appearance. Or you go very dark, and ensure yourself a life of misery with floors that show everything.

Whether it's Red or White, I recommend water popping before staining. It will help the denser part of the wood soak in more stain like the softer grain does. You're still going to see the grain, but it's less prominent. I really like water pop and DS Jacobean.

The grain is 'open' in North American oak. It turns dark with stain and stands out. You can fill it with a pale beige opaque stain. Ceruse is the procedure. Ten it'll be a light grain similar to the popular European Oak you see a lot of.

When you stain dark enough to hide the grain your floors will show everything down to dust. A robovac is a good method to live with that.
