Named forms of Japanese maples are always produced by asexual propagation - grafting, or less commonly, by cuttings. Seed grown JM's will always be quite variable in appearance, including both leaf shape and leaf color. Regardless of their source, seedlings could produce either red or green leaves, dissected, partially dissected or a full palmate shape and may develop a different habit than their parent........upright, weeping or something in between.

Seedlings are a great way to increase your collection inexpensively if you are not picky about having a named form. It just takes a couple of seasons before you decide if they are worth growing on to adulthood.
