Ideas needed. At a lost

hello i need help. no one opens the closet to hang up sweaters imagine winter. everthing over couch. this is a new open concept. so am i lost missing my kitchen wall and small wall by entrance dividing into living area. how can i make this walkway and living area nice but functional. most important walkway functional and inviting with shoes all over. sorry I am all over the place. thank you

Purchase a nice, long buffet cabinet to place under the windows. Have one of the drawers / doors be for shoes. Assign a different drawer for each person in the house - if their stuff is on the sofa, it gets tossed in their drawer.

Nobody opens the door to hang things up?

1. You could remove the doors and make a recessed cubby area with hooks, nicely painted. Perhaps that would work.

2. Keep the doors on but put hooks inside instead of a rod with hangers. Takes less effort to sling over a hook than to use hangers.

3. If someone tosses on the sofa without hanging up, you toss it on the floor of the closet and they can go fish for it.

Who is that "no one", your kids and/or spouse? Come up with a system and tell them you expect everyone to help keep the house organized. Do a trial run where you confiscate things that get left out, but return it when they ask. After a couple of weeks impose a fine if they want to retrieve their items.

I can't stand to live in a messy space, so I expect family members to pitch in and do their part.

I feel your pain. I live in a true four season climate too. I feel that you are missing out on the full open concept vibe by your sofa placement. I would move your sofa to either face the window or with it's back to the window. I would then remove the blue ottoman and place a long console on legs along the wall with a mirror above it. I say on legs so you can line up shoes underneath. You could possibly add a shoe rack underneath to get a couple of tiers of shoe storage and you could also place a curtain around it. I would also add a coat tree and one (or more) larger baskets to keep everything contained.

Have you considered flipping the sofa to face the window, and then having the two chairs flanking the window? We also recommend look at creating an entry way with a bench, mirror, and console table. The bench can house the shoes under it. Then you could also do a sofa table behind the sofa for more storage and lighting. You also might look at some artwork, some more C-tables, and a coffee table. The image below shows the layout we are proposing. Just the sofa facing the window (in this case the fireplace), with the chairs flanking the window (fireplace below).

My mom used to put things that were left out by any of us (I have three sisters) in a rubber tote out in the garage. It was mostly filled with stuff that belonged to my sister, Dianne (she is still that way = messy) 😂

It seems you have done a lot so far. Try adding a mudroom, or entryway area, to the space. This will allow for shoe storage, a place to drop keys, and a place to put on/take off shoes. Please take a moment to look over the images included below to get more ideas for how you might want to rework the space to include a mudroom/entryway.
