open Floor plan for kitchen

Hi all,

We are thinking of extending our kitchen space, because now we only have a 6m2 kitchen, which is quite small for us. I would like to know what the floorplan would look like in case we remove (and maybe replace) walls. What would be the best way to do it? I love the idea of an open kitchen, but the house has arches as openings and we would love to keep at least one or two of them (if possible). Anybody who can show me what solutions we have? Many thanks in advance. Your help is very much appreciated!

You are posting on the American houzz site so feet and inches plus English labels would help. We’d also need photos of these arched openingS.

tras. is an unknown ...can mostly figure out the other spaces. is tras the utility closet? then where are you going to open the kitchen? the european style kitchen is generally not "open plan " as in the USA. Be happy with smaller more efficient appliances and stay in the cocina footprint, if you ask me. Perhaps a coffee bar in the lounge with the good view ?

coffee/ tea/ wine service along bano wall in lounge maybe??

Thank you so much for you comments. The Trastero is indeed a little storage room where we store our household equipment and we have food storage there as well. Downstairs we have a utility room and we are organising it now, so the household equipment can be placed there too soon. I think with adding the storage (tras) room to the kitchen we already have quite some more space. I feel like the 6m2 kitchen we have now is just too small to store everything and with high cupboards it feels very full, so that is why we are considering removing a wall. The one that goes into the Trastero seems to be the most logical option. Maybe you are right that open plan in this case is not doable. But maybe something something like following would be an option? It will lead into the dining room then which seems logical too.

Still no photos of the existing house?

@Hallett&Co, thank you for your contribution. I already got some other helpful replies from other members, but more ideas are very much appreciated. Pictures of the living room and dining room can be found in my profile (although a bit dated now), but of course I can post them here for you too. In the first picture you see a big arch which connects the dining room with the living room and in the living room you see a narrower arch which takes you too the storage room (the door you see) and behind that, the kitchen. Thank you for taking the time to think along!

The arched openings are pretty and are already quite wide -- I don't really see opening up full walls as being advantageous. However. It does look like the smaller opening leading to the storage and kitchen could be widened. So if you add the storage to kitchen (perhaps creating some vertical pantry storage cabinets) you could widen that narrow doorway and create more connection between living and kitchen.

Thank you for your reply! That might not be a bad idea! Thanks. @Hallet&Co, still waiting for your ideas 😉

I agree with rebasheba. I was going to say you can remove the tras. and add floor to ceiling tall cabinets for your pantry instead. Then you would have more room in your kitchen area and see you living room like you want.

I see the easy possibility of an open plan in your space when you remove the storage room walls. Open plans are not on the way out anywhere in the US, ime. Taking both walls down can give you the clearance space for an island. Something also popular and part of an open plan.
