Under stairs not well used

last month

I have a closet in my house that opens up from the kitchen and is used for storage.
It is located under the stairs.
I really dislike it. It is hard to get into and it's just used as a catch-all and it cannot seem to get it well organized.
I'd like to open up the wall on the other side of the room to create something like this.
Ideally this would be in area where we can store beverages. I would incorporate a beverage fridge with the cabinetry on the bottom.

great idea, depending on how much space you have to work with once get the support you still need for the stairway and you cover all the studs.

    here's another idea...

Have you opened it up to see what you have to work with? Sometimes there are electrical runs, plumbing, heating... you still have to support the load, It would be great to see what you are working with for suggestions.

it is not going to give you a lot of space to work with, but I would open up the wall.

Remove the sheetrock and look at the studs and see what you can do with it.

I have seen where people have added drawers to the lowest point to utilize as much as possible. You are only going to get the height that you already have.

Take some blue painters tape and tape out the framework of the stairs and see what you can do.

Take some measurements from inside the closet so you can spec out exactly how much width, depth and height (with angle) you have to work with.

Do you have a good carpenter or cabinet maker for the project? There will be electrical work too.

I agree with @HALLETT & Co., something is not looking right there

Where is this landing, and the stairs leading to? Some sort of storage space? It looks like there is no adequate headroom if standing on that landing.

If Hallet & Co. is correct then, no - it won't provide you with a lot of space. Perhaps you should consider an organization system for your existing closet that will take better advantage of the space you have in there. Traditional Japanese homes sometimes take advantage of stairs and incorporate built in drawers. That might be something to consider.

The line that @HALLEY & Co has drawn on the wall is about the correct area of the closet.

That landing leads up to the second story. Ands lead down to the front entry of the house.

The picture might be deceiving but there's plenty of space from head to ceiling.

For the available space, how wide is the triangle at 36” off the floor (about the height of an under counter beverage fridge)?

I haven’t opened up this wall yet—still a bit nervous and plan to talk with my contractor later this month.

I’m hoping to install a beverage fridge, countertop, and base cabinets along this wall. I’ve measured everything out:

    Total available length: 81"

Usable length for 36" tall cabinets: 67" (to keep the line clean below the large mirror)

Depth available (closet behind wall): 38"

How wide is it at 46” and 52”?

You probably want a minimum of 12“-18” open above the countertop end like shown in your photos. So the width at 46”-52” from the floor may roughly be your usable width for the opening.

If you go with 24” depth fridge/cabinets, you won’t fully utilize the 38” available but that’s fine.

    Good luck with your contractor!

the real dilemma is that the stairs still need support studs to keep them from falling.

you will only have the limited space between supporting members for you design, not to mention finishing the space with drywall..
