Exterior paint colors

last modified: 6 days ago

Hi need some help with my selction of exterior paint colors. My home is a colonial NW facing and gets bright sun most of the day. Current color is a dark brown which is uninspiring. I am thinking of Coventry Gray siding (stain), with chantily lace trim (satin), Front door (Semi Gloss), gutters (satin), garage door (satin) on the side (not visible in the front) with Black magic. Dormers will be Chantily Lace same as the trim. Current dark brown and ChatGPT visualization is also attached. I am looking for a high end and timeless look. Thank you!

For starters all the overgrown bushes at the front of the home need to be removed. They cannot be cut back unfortunately.

Have you given any thought to installing a canopy over the front door. It would add some dimension to the face of the house.

I like this combination of light warm gray with bright white trim.

I really like the colors in your inspo pic, along with Beverly’s warm gray with white.

ID and assess your shrubs before you remove them. You probably will want to keep many of them. Most shrubs can be cut back and without an ID, which is next to impossible from the distance of your pic, none of us here offer much advice as to what to keep, what can be pruned and what is better off removed. I think lush landscaping that borders on overgrown is much more attractive than removing it all and putting in small shrubs along the foundation.

    Lovely, in a beautiful setting.

the gray is very battleship looking, a softer greige direction rather than cool gray.

Why the contrast with the roof, chantilly lace is very stark against a dark roof.

Bright sun on a black door is severe. High end and timeless is not standard.

I like the light grey or griege also - i usually like very low contrast between body color and trim tho so all the windows don’t jump out and facade feels more serene (just a me thing)

I like your inspiration (first picture), what you have now, was not a good color choice with your roof.

I agree a grey and white is classic but you really need a proper portico to protect guests some awesome foundation plantigs with great mixed plantings with some color.

An eyebrow awning over the front door would be awesome.

Thanks everyone. Basically the feedback I have received so far just on the paint is as follows: 1. Is the Coventry I have planned too stark and moody. - I actually tried Gray Owl and Stonnington Gray which are lighter shades but the worry I have is that they may look too washed out in the bright sun which I have most of the day and look too beige which looks like all my neighbors houses which are mostly white, beige or light gray. This also is why I picked Chantily Lace for the trim instead of a warmer white such as White Dove 2. Gutter and downspout colors - In a traditional colonial the gutters match the trim. I want to elevate this and make it look more contemporary hence the darker maybe Wroght Iron gutters. 3. Dormers contrasting against the roof. I am moving towards a gray dormer as well to make it look more contemporary. 4. Portico - I would love a portico but dont want to worry about the additional cost or tax increase right now. My inspiration has been the following colonial attached. I know mine is not a stone front but trying to borrow from the design features e.g. Darker gutters, Dormers that stand out against the roof and the gray and white combination.

Totally my opinion but I think a lot of newer homes are emphasizing gutters bc the homes don't actually have any real architectural features on which to focus

(or at the other end of the spectrum you see the new houses with 14 unnecessary gables, lots of black guttering and other elements tacked on the front (to “add interest“) and then totally uninspired landscaping where it looks like they ran out of money)

for your lovely home, I think simple is very elegant - updating the paint colors and investing in more sophisticated landscaping will carry the home the farthest

I would do a bit softer on the trim. BM White Dove is nice with Coventry. I love this palette, but you may also consider a darker blue/green door to pull out the pretty blue in Coventry. I like Newburg Green in full gloss for this palette.

Thank you Ashley. Actually White Dove was my first choice but it looks a little yellow in the bright sun that I get in the day and felt a litte too traditional whereas I am looking for something more contemporary. I was also thinking about Stonnington Gray for the siding. It is a little softer but risks being washed out in the bright sun again.
